Funny Ideas For Floss

Of course we all know everyone should floss everyday to protect their oral health, but here are some funny ideas for floss that some members at the Listers group contributed.  ENJOY!! :)

Monica Contributes:

I also read in a magazine that Dental Floss works well to clean the space in between your countertop and your oven/stove.  I also use it to clean the crevices around the wheel of my pizza cutters!  I love to hear of new uses for floss. Any more? Please send them my way!

Maria from CA Contributes:

Funny!!!   Dental floss has many uses.   Remember when some person escapedfrom prison making a rope of floss?

Brynne from Nebraska contributes:

I just got my latest issue of Taste of Home's Quick Cooking and the following tip from Beckey Tibbets of Argyle, TX was listed.

"Cutting a decorated layer cake can sometimes create an unattractive presentation.  To avoid the messy globs of frosting that collect on the knife, use dental floss to cut the cake.  Just cut the floss to about 8 more inches than the widest part of the cake.  Wrap one end around a finger of one hand and the other end around a finger of the other hand.  Pull it taut, then pull the floss firmly straight down through the cake to slice it.  It works wonderfully!"

Canylee contributes:

I use floss to slice Velveeta cheese!

~Jan from California~ (aka FlossBoss) contributes:

Amy, In my office I hand out helium inflated balloons (with the dentist's logo on them) to the children. (sometimes adults on their birthdays : > ) I use the flavored floss to tie up the balloons and the children hold onto the floss containers so the balloons don't fly away. I always get parental permission first and also tell the parents the safety issues regarding the broken balloon pieces and their disposal. I have also used patient napkins to wrap small presents and the floss as "ribbon" to decorate. Floss also makes handy string to hang Christmas ornaments. I have a lot of tooth and dental ornaments after nearly 32 years as a dental hygienist! Regards, ~Jan from California~ (aka FlossBoss)

Janet Farber from NJ contributes:

Unwaxed floss is great for sewing turkeys at Thanksgiving. I once heard that in an emergency delivery that floss is great for tying the umbilical cord! Janet Farber

Marna from NM contributes:

I have one young patient who shared with me how she uses dental floss. She performs on stage with a dance troupe and said that she always keeps floss with her to make emergency repairs to her ballet slippers when the seams open. Marna from Albuquerque, NM

MCD Contributes:

Dental floss, especially the sample size, is so easy to carry with you. I always have some in my purse, in the car, in our camping and fishing gear. We've used floss to catch crawfish at the lake by dangling a piece of cheese or bacon on the end of a line of floss. The crawfish grab on and won't let go. Before long, we've got enough for dinner.  MCD

Stacy Frank Contributes:

My sister-in-law used to use cinnamon waxed floss to mend her red wetsuit: the floss is waterproof, strong and the just the right color. Stacy Frank

After I handed a child his new toothbrush and floss he looked up at his dad and said "yippee! More kite string dad!"

Dr. Scott Swank Assistant Curator The Dr. Samuel D. Harris National Museum of Dentistry contributes:
Floss! Works great for sewing buttons on work coats and other things that are difficult to keep buttons on. Also works great for sewing umbrella sections back onto the spines - doesn't wear out as fast as the original thread used either.

Heidi Binner contributes:
Fishing line is too firm and thread breaks too easliy. So I use floss (the minty is my favorite) to make my pretty little flower beaded necklaces. I've had one for over 8 years that has not broken! Heidi Binner, DH 3, Edm., AB

Marta Floss works well on frosted sheet cakes to make the outline to cut the cake or to decorate each piece.

Carol Martin contributes:
I used dental floss to fix my white shoes--around the toe where they tend to come apart, worked great.
My most favorite use for dental floss is to tie up my roses and my tressel for vine plants. (My neighbors get a real kick out of this).

Ashley contributes:
Once at my work we had a rather large bulletin board fall because of the string holding it up. So I unraveled some dental floss and now it hangs proudly in the dental office and hasn't budged yet.

My hairdresser used dental tape to tie the pad back on around her kids trampoline and it has held for several months so far!

Kim Carter , BEM, EDH, Dip.DHE. Gosport, UK contributes:
A patient of mine , while I was serving in th Womens Royal Naval Service ,continually came to the surgery asking for free floss. I was intrigued ! How could he use so much? It turned out that he played the bagpipes and used floss ( preferably tape width) to clean the tubes on his pipes!

My 6 year old daughter first taught me to use floss to repair her broken necklace. It is a regular part of her craft making experiences. She really makes me laugh.

M.Crutcher, Creative Memories Consultant and Dental Hygienist contributes:
Floss is great for helping to remove pictures stuck to the pages of "magnetic" photo albums.

A patient told me her son uses floss and paper towels to make parachutes all the time. Just tie the four corners of the towel. Some kids are easy to amuse!!

Lori Thompson in Austin, Texas contributes:
Floss also works well with slicing cinnamon rolls (homemade, of course!). After rolling up the dough with all the cinnamon, butter, raisins & whatever else you put in yours, slide the floss underneath and bring up the two ends and criss cross them over each other & pull! The dough springs back into place unlike using a knife! Wonderful trick taught to me by my Mom!

Terrill King-Hamm, RDH, President Western Slope Dental Hygiene Society contributes:
We use floss to thread and hang popcorn during the holidays (cranberries too, but not with our white carpets). I have also fished with floss! I also use floss to hang my frames on the walls of family photos (on those frames with no hanging hooks!). Works great! Our best wishes to you and your family!
