OraPharma, Inc., a specialty pharmaceutical company founded in 1996 with an initial focus on the emerging field of oral health care, discovers, develops and commercializes therapeutics for oral health.
OraPharma's initial product, ARESTIN®, represents a promising therapeutic advance for the adjunct treatment of periodontal disease.
ARESTIN® is the first locally administered time-released antibiotic encapsulated in microspheres that effectively kills the germs that cause periodontal disease or periodontitis, a disease that affects more than 50 million people in the U.S.
ARESTIN® (minocycline HCl 1mg) microspheres is a locally delivered antibiotic used for the treatment of chronic periodontitis. Arestin® is indicated as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP) procedures for reduction of pocket depth in patients with adult periodontitis. Arestin® may be used as part of a periodontal program which includes good oral hygiene, and scaling and root planing.
Arestin® contains minocycline, a tetracycline derivative, and therefore should not be used in children and in pregnant or nursing women. The use of drugs of the tetracycline class during tooth development may cause permanent discoloration of the teeth.
The most common treatment-emergent adverse events were headache (9.0%), infection (7.6%), flu syndrome (5.0%), and pain (4.3%). These occurred at a similar rate to SRP and SRP+placebo.
Periodontitis is an infection of the gums, which if left untreated, can lead to tooth loss and may be linked to other serious diseases such as cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis and diabetes. ARESTIN® uses new microsphere technology to easily and effectively kill the germs that cause periodontal disease.
Periodontal disease occurs when bacteria builds up on your teeth under the gums, causing your gums to become red and swollen. This condition may eventually results in damage to the ligaments and bone that hold your teeth in place, forming pockets around your teeth. As the disease progresses and these pockets become deeper, your teeth can become loose and fall out. Dentists and registered dental hygienists can tell how severe a patient's periodontitis is by measuring pocket depth and reviewing patient x-rays.
ARESTIN® is the antibiotic and is administered locally, directly into the infected pockets between your teeth. A dentist or dental hygienist can administer ARESTIN® after scaling and root planing, a common procedure used to treat periodontal disease.
When used together with scaling and root planing, ARESTIN® significantly reduces the depth of infected pockets and helps prevent disease progression. A combined therapy of ARESTIN® plus scaling and root planing is more effective at fighting periodontal disease than scaling and root planing alone. ARESTIN® was shown to be particularly even effective in even the more difficult to treat patients such as smokers or people who have cardiovascular disease.
