ALABAMA:
$13-15 (B), $ 17- 22 (EXP), no (EXD)
allowed. (1999)
SPECIAL NOTE FOR AL!!! THIS IS WHAT
PRECEPTORSHIP CAN DO TO YOU!!!!!!
I moved here from Franklin, TN last
year, and I was making $28 an hour
in TN. I am now in the very south of
Alabama (near Pensacola, FL) and I
am finding starting salary is about
$15 an hour, which is what I am
making right now. I was told by
another hygienist that salary ranges
from $15 - $20 an hour. Typically,
it is at the most $19 an hour. So,
I'm crying down here, and wishing I
had my salary in TN. (3/2005)
ALASKA:
$30-32 (B) $35-45 (EXP), L.A.,
nitrous oxide allowed. (1999)
Thanks for the input on rates in
your area. The rates in and around
Anchorage, Alaska, go from $30.00 -
$45.00 per hour. The rate differs
according to the office where you
work, but I never took less than
$35.00 per hour with 30 years of
experience and the ability to give
local anesthesia. (1999)
I am a dh student at university of
Alaska Anchorage so I am not out in
the work force yet. I plan on
working in the bush and am hoping to
start at a minimum $40 per hour plus
good benefits. There is a desperate
need for hygienist's in the bush.
(1/2001)
Just letting you know the salary
around here in Anchorage Alaska. I
am starting out at 30 per hour, but
will get a 5 dollar raise once I
get licensed in Local Anesthesia.
Experienced hygienists are making
around 38 per hour. And I heard that
the hygienists that fly to the bush,
(which are the villages you can only
get to by plane), are making a lot
more but I am not exactly sure how
much more. (4/2004)
ARIZONA:
Wages here vary quite a bit
depending on region of the state. I
have been an RDH in Tucson for only
5 months and make $25/hr. with one
week paid vacation after a year and
health insurance. Most of my former
class mates are making between
$25-28/hr. However, the wages for
the Phoenix area are around
$30-40/hr (B). I'm not sure what an
experienced RDH is paid in AZ.(1999)
I live in Yuma. I have been
practicing for 2 years. The average
pay is between 25-30 per hour.
however, I average 35-40 per hour
because of commission on root
planning and I anesthetize the
dentist patients. We get uniforms
provided, 2-3 paid CE courses and 6
days paid vacation. (9/00)
I would like to say that I just
graduated and was offered a position
in Tucson for 30 per hour. Most
classmates are making from 28 per
hour and up. An experienced
hygienist is making 32 per hour with
benefits. I was offered 30 an hour
with 11 years of Dental assisting
experience. (9/00)
Hello, I am a dental hygiene student
but have 14 years dental experience
as an office manager and dental
assistant. I know hygienists in
Arizona that make 120,000 per year
working four to five days a week,
and making 50 commission, then there
are the ones who make 28$ an hour.
That is horrible. I want to let all
those low paid hygienists know
exactly what they are worth. They
make sometimes one half of the
office production for the year and
get paid such a low amount its
scary. The service they provide is a
billable service to all insurance
companies and the only other person
who provides a billable service is
the doctor. I hope each one of you
takes this information to heart,
because sadly enough 80% of the
doctors out there will really use
you and pay low. Remember what you
are worth! (12/00)
Tucson, Arizona $38.00/hour EXD
(10/2005)
I have been a hygienist 5 years now
and have worked in Minnesota and now
Arizona. I made 32.00 and hour in
downtown Minneapolis with a 200.00 a
month stipend for medical insurance.
I now live in Arizona where
hygienist make from 30-40 an hour
but the problem all over is too many
schools are opening which is driving
the wage down everywhere. I feel
that all hygienists need a four year
bachelor degree to make them more
competent and valuable not just
teeth cleaners. I feel in the
medical field that insurance should
be mandatory and the reason it isn’t
offered is that many hygienists
don’t demand it. Stand up for what
you want you deserve it. (6/2006)
ARKANSAS:
small town south= 45% of all
production, 45% all production
(excl. exams), $250 pr day, 50% all
production. (12/00)
I work 4 days per week in Northwest
Arkansas. I work for an excellent
general dentist. I have been in this
office for three years. I was making
250. per day with one week paid
vacation after one year and two
weeks after two years. I usually
have 5 paid holidays per year but I
can't count on it because sometimes
I don't get it if the holiday falls
on a day that I wouldn't have
worked. Some CE is paid for but I do
not get paid to attend the course.
No medical, dental or retirement. My
uniforms and scrub jackets are
purchased for me (only about 2 sets
per year though. I recently went on
commission which includes the
periodic exam but I do have to deal
with insurance "write-offs". On
commission I am averaging over $300
per day. I am pleased with the pay
increase but it was much more
stressful for me at first. (7/2005)
I have been working in south
Arkansas for almost 4 years. I made
$200 a day with no benefits the
first year. I then changed offices
and now make $250 a day with one
week vacation after one year and two
weeks after three years. I also have
paid holidays if they fall on my
work day. My CPR is paid for and I
get paid for the half day I miss
while attending the course. (2/2008)
CALIFORNIA:
My rate of pay is $43.00/hr, which
is average for the San Francisco Bay
area. I have limited benefits...no
medical.(1999)
Northern: $280/day minimum (B), up
to $375/day (more for bonus
incentive pay scales. Paying by the
day is the norm here..usually 8hrs/day~can
vary. Expanded functions doesn't
affect pay to my knowledge--we can
all do anesthesia, nitrous, and STC.(1999)
I am a hygienist on the central
coast of California. This is about
1.5 south of San Francisco. I have
been a hygienist for 9 years. I love
my job a great deal. I truly enjoy
the challenge of periodontally
involved patients. I strictly work
on commission of 50/50. I only
charge the patient what is truly
needed. In California the average
rate of pay is anywhere from $260.00
- $320.00 a day. Most hygienist's
have to negotiate benefits and wage.
Depends on what you can offer the
office and how much experience you
have.(1999)
One office I work at 2 1/2 days a
week at $250 a day plus 2 weeks paid
vacation/ 5 day plus a Sar Sep IRA
matched by my employer and 12 hours
of CE units paid and a uniform
allowance. I figure it to be worth
about $275 a day or $34 an hour. At
my other office I make $33. and hour
and punch a time clock. No benefits
at all.(1999)
Cost of living is very high in CA,
especially SF area. Yes, I do make
$400 in one GP office but without
benefits. In another, its currently
$360 but with medical and 1 week
paid vacation and 401K. Graduating
students with no experience are told
to ask for no less than $350. Temps
are paid $375/day. You do have to
consider the area for salary ranges
as in essence it may even out with
other areas' cost of living. (8/01)
Although I am not working in the Bay
area of California, I do know that
the average for an RDH is
approximately $400 a day, which for
an 8 hour day is $50 an hour. In San
Diego as an earlier post stated it
is about $320 a day, which for an 8
hour day is $40 an hour. Cost of
living is a factor. Are you paying
$2 per gallon for gasoline? $160 a
month electric bill for a 2 bedroom
apartment about 1100 sq.. feet?
$1200 a month rent? On and on.
(8/01)
I'm not sure about Santa Barbara,
but here in the SF Bay Area, I am
making $400/day. (8/01)
The going day rate in San Diego is
320$ per day. (8/01)
I am making $290.00 a day flat
salary. Shop around! (8/01)
I live in California and work 3-5
days a week for three different
dentist including one periodontist
my wages range from $41.75/hour to
$400./day...EVERYDAY I get at least
two phone calls from dentists
hiring... Anyone wanting to
relocate??? Housing is quite
expensive here...a small two bedroom
house will cost you min $1200 per
month to rent PS...I've been out of
school since June 2001 (2/01)
I'm in the San Francisco bay area
and make $425/$430 day with 8
patients. Temp agencies pay between
$375 and $400. (3/03)
The going rate, I think is around
$50 and hour. Since I have been with
the same office for awhile, I am not
completely sure. But it is at least
that. I live in Marin County which
is just North of San Francisco.
(3/2003)
In Sacramento CA salaries run approx
$40 per pt or $320 a day. (8
patients) (4/2003)
In the North Bay area of California
the salaries really vary. In Napa it
is anywhere from 37 -47/hr. In
Sonoma and Marin County it is more
like 50 - 55/hr. Usually part time
in more than one office and no
benefits. (12/03)
I live in Temecula, CA and earn
$37.50 per hour as a dental
hygienist. I work four, 8 hour days
per week. I have medical and paid
holidays and one week paid
vacation. (4/2004)
San Francisco Bay area--per diem
will vary; pay rates that I am aware
of range from $380-500/day ($400/day
is average). Time per patient can
also vary from 45/50/60 min per
patient for routine prophy. Time per
SRP quad 45 or 60 min per quad.
Benefits range from nothing to full
medical, 401k matching plan
(percentage of match ranges from 3%
to 7%, depending on the office), CEU,
uniform allowance, vacation/sick pay
range from nothing up to 2 weeks.
Pay and benefits are mainly
contingent on negociation skills
during the interview. (4/2004)
In Fresno, CA (central valley), I
make $280 - $300 per day. I've only
come across two DDS who pay higher,
one at $315 and $320. This rate is
not depend on experience. I
graduated in 2003. (10/2004)
My salary in Napa is 360 per day in
one office. The other office I don't
usually work a full day so I get $46
per hour. I get paid vacation in
both offices equivalent to 3 weeks
after 4 years. I get sick pay in the
office that I work full days 2-3
days per week. No real rhyme or
reason he just pays you as long as
you don't take advantage. That
office also has am IRA that he
matches 3% and you are fully vested
immediately. (10/2004)
In San Diego CA I work 4 days a week
in one office and make $360/day with
2 weeks paid vacation, 75% of
medical paid, and SEP IRA after 3yrs
of employment (been there 2). I work
1 day a week in another office and
make $345/day with no benefits. Temp
agencies currently pay $345/day.
(10/2004)
I'm from the Inland Empire (B) my
pay is from $300-320 per diem with
no benefits, incentives for
production are offered. from what i
know we are all licensed to do local
anesthesia. (3/2005)
The Going Rate For 8 Patient Day In
The Monterey County Area is 375.00
TO 400.00. (3/2005)
San Francisco Bay Area - In the city
of San Francisco, RDHs make around
$400 per day (beginning), usually
without benefits. All expanded
duties are allowed including placing
antimicrobials. (9/2005)
In the areas outside of San
Francisco, RDHs make from $350-$375
per day (beginning). (9/2005)
I work in San Diego making $50/hr at
one office 2 days a week and $46/hr
at another 1 day a week. I have 20
years exp. I am part time at both
and new to both offices since
relocating from WA. I have paid
holidays, uniforms. Both are older
docs. Younger ones in town do not
seem to pay as well. (9/2005)
In Marin County, just north of San
Francisco, I make $54/hr through a
temp agency. (Of course, no
benefits) There is no shortage of
jobs here and my schedule is packed
full. (10/2005)
I have been practicing dental
hygiene for 3 years now. I currently
work in Oakland, CA and make $450
per day ($56.25/hr). I work full
time (8hrs/day 4days/wk). I have
full medical benefits, paid holidays
(about 8/yr) 2 weeks paid vacation
and 2 sick days/year. I have 1hr per
pt for PRO/PM and 1.5 hrs for new
pts. For new pt's the hygienist has
to do FMX, restorative charting,
probing, digital intraoral photos,
and prophy. We use laser therapy,
antimicrobial irrigation and
subgingival placement with our SRPs.
I should be getting paid more for
all that I do but I'll be looking
for a new place of employment soon.
I was advised that: Hygienists' rule
of thumb should be: You should make
at least 33% of what you produce. I
produce between $1200-$1800/day for
that office. They are more about
productivity and money than
quality patient care. (11/2005)
I live in Orange County California.
The pay range is anywhere from
$350.00 (for an 8 hour day) to
$400.00 per day. There are also
doctors who give profit sharing
plans, benefits, 401 K plans. The
last doctor I worked for gave me all
of the above, while I was only
working 2 days a week for him.
Things are good out here in OC.
(9/2006)
In Lemoore, California the market is
very 'swamped' due to all of the
hygiene schools around. On the Navy
base, they pay $24/hr and off base
(if you're lucky enough to find a
job) it's around $35/hr. (1/2007)
I work in Central California and am
very blessed. I work
assisted-hygiene and work out of two
rooms. I work on salary or
commission, whichever is more for
the day. My daily rate is $285 or
30% of my production. I get paid
commission for xrays, prophies,
SRP's, sealants (even if the RDHEF
does the sealants), ortho surveys,
whitening and Perio Protect. I
haven't received my daily rate in
years. My average daily pay is $500.
I work very hard, but also have an
assistant that will work hard, too.
I also don't have to do any
sterilization, taking xrays,
breaking down or setting up the
room. I have worked in this office
for 7 years. Each time our fees
increase, my salary increases. I
know a lot of RDH's that have made
the same rate for years. (1/2007)
I currently make $56/hr. doing
assisted hygiene with 50min. per
patient. Roseville, CA (7/2007)
I work in Sonoma county which is
about an hour north of San
Francisco. I have expanded
functions. I work on an hourly basis
8 pts a day and 3 days a week. I am
paid $57 an hour. I get a $40 bonus
per quadrant on all the root planing,
and 1/3 of the x-ray fees, we use a
fair amount of Arestin for our pts
and again I get a small bonus on
that as well as bleach trays etc if
I have explained all to the pt and
they decided to purchase. I have
been here 4 years and have 2 weeks
paid vacation, 5 holidays, one week
sick leave a year. I have never used
my sick leave and my boss will
usually give me one or 2 days of it
as a bonus for being healthy. I have
a portion of my health care
insurance paid about 1/2, a 401 that
my boss matches my contribution. I
get a very nice end of the year
bonus which is at least weeks
salary. My boss shares the cost of
CE Units, and has twice sent me to
classes he wanted me to take and
picked up the hotel and flights
besides. My dental and my husbands
dental are covered here. Next year
my vacation will go to 3 weeks paid.
I would say that I am average as far
as salary etc. going by what other
hygienists I know have told me they
receive. (8/2007)
I am a hygienist with 11 years of
experience and work in San Diego
five days a week. I make an hourly
rate of $52.50 plus bonuses based on
the total office production.
Currently the bonuses average about
$500 per month. My employer is
generous in providing 2 weeks of
paid vacation, paid CE, provides
uniforms, matches up to 3% in an
IRA, and gives great year-end
bonuses. Any dental work is free for
myself and my family. The office is
busy but I am compensated well. We
use do use lasers and have very
cutting edge technology in the
office. Being in California, we also
have expanded functions so quite
often I end up giving anesthetic for
my doctor when he runs behind. The
patients do appreciate this. : )
(9/2008)
COLORADO:
I would say average pay in Colorado
is $30 per hour.(1999)
I have been a hyg for 13 years in
the denver metro area and have been
making $40/hour for the last 5
years-both temping and holding
permanent positions. I started my
current job in Nov 2006 at an office
3 days a week-getting about 28-30
hours per week at $40/hour. We take
an hour lunch and see 1 patient per
hour. I get paid vacation based on
how many hours/days I work-ends up
to be 2 hours per month. I also get
401K- the doctor matches up to 3% of
my gross. I also get CE paid for. I
have the option of getting health
insurance paid for but I get
that through my husband. (7/2007)
CONNECTICUT:
$28/hour(1999)
I am making 25 an hour in Conn. It
depends on what part of Conn. you
live. The closer to N.Y. the more
money a hygienist makes. (9/00)
I have been a hygienist for 2 years
and I am making $32.00 an hour. I
started at 24.00 two years ago. I
work in southern Connecticut. It
varies around the state. It's
important for us to talk to each
other so that we can be paid fairly.
There are hygienist I know who have
been doing hygiene for 10+ years who
are making less than I. Remember
ladies, there is power in numbers.
(12/00)
EXD $40 per hr. full benefits
(11/2005)
I make 45.00 an hour in Middletown,
Ct. Nothing else. In Deep River, I
make 31.00 with 3% that goes into a
401K that my boss pays for. Also 7
days off a year. No holidays, I am
only there 2 days a week and have
been for 25 years. Plus a $1000.00 a
year Christmas bonus. Great birthday
and Christmas parties too. Uniforms
covered as well as continuing ed. A
third office I work in I get 30% of
what I bring in so it can be very
lucrative, since I see patients
every 45 minutes. It work out to
more than my Middletown job at
$45.00 per hour. (A gift certificate
for $75.00 for a spa day) (1/2007)
I work 40 hours/ wk assisted Hygiene
in 2 ops on a 30% commission with
some limited benefits. I can provide
the same or better quality care with
a great assistant and see 10-18
patients a day, including 10-20
quadrants of laser-assisted root
planing per week.( I do a lot of
cleaning up after the previous RDH-
tons of old residual sub-calc and
4-6+ mm pocketing that the patients
were never made aware of!) I am
laser and Local anesthetics
certified, 30 years experience. My
daily average is @ $500- but I work
hard and efficiently and earn every
penny. I work a second job 1 day a
week in a perio office- 7 hr day,
well maintained patients, 1 hour
each, low stress, slow and boring-
$250/day plus %3 matching from
employer. (1/2007)
(B) and (EXD) (local anesthesia)
I work in a general practice about
20 hours per week and make
$36/hour. Once I am there for 6
months, I will be paid holidays that
fall on the day that I work. I also
work in a perio office and make
$35/hour. I use LA in both
practices. (2/2008)
DELAWARE:
The pay in Delaware averages 25 per
hour in the northern part of the
state, and starts around 18 per hour
in the southern part.(1999)
FLORIDA:
I am from the Tampa-Bay area. This
area hygienist's make anywhere from
20-35 dollars an hour in our
area...not many benefits!(1999)
I presently live in Tampa Fl. where
the average pay is $25 per hour but
there are many offices which offer
bonus or commission. I know one
hygienist who makes $72,000/yr. She
works with an assistant and is on
commission.(1999)
Hi! I've been working for one year
now in Central Florida and my pay
rate is $160/day soon to be bumped
up to 168. Uniforms and CE are paid
for my dental work is free. We get
$100 bonus money each month when a
certain office-wide production
figure is reached. Our doctors work
hard so it is rare when we don't
make it. Also, the doctors take the
entire staff on a vacation every
other year...usually a cruise.
Overall I consider myself to be
pretty lucky to have found this
office...the work environment is
tremendous, the practice is very
prestigious and probably best of all
is the pay rate increases
drastically each year!(6/3/00)
I just moved to Naples, FL. I have
been on five interviews and the
salaries offered ranged from $25.00
pr/hr to $31.00 pr/hr. Of course
these were all part-time jobs with
no benefits. I am working in 3
offices to make a full time
schedule.(12/00)
I made $102,000 working 3 1/2 days
per week working less than 9 1/2 mo
in Brandon Florida. (4/01)
I work in Punta Gorda, FL and make
$225 / day, plus paid holidays, one
week paid vacation but no medical
benefits. I find that the Punta
Gorda/Pt. Charlotte area is behind
with their pay scale and benefit
packages and there is a severe lack
of RDH in the area. RDHs are gong
north or south to get better pay and
benefits. I was fired (after 4 years
of employment) because my Dr. was
convinced by his new office manager
that my 45% commission was too
much-but his new $200/ day out of
school RDH isn't making half the
production that I was. When are
these Drs. going to learn to look at
the big picture and take care of
their employees because they are the
ones that will profit him in the
long run. (6/01)
The average in FL is around $28 per
hour. (8/01)
Hi. I am an RDH in Pensacola, Fl
(Northwestmost part). From here to
Tallahassee the pay is 17-22(perio
practice) an hour. Only benefits
are uniforms once a year and most
pay CEU's and five sick days. The
average RDH makes the doc 800 plus a
day for normal recall @ 8 pts a day.
This is too low! If you would like
to talk to me about a movement
nationwide to demand thirty percent
of production to increase our pay,
email me. It is time to educate the
public and DENTISTS on our value.
If they valued us they would pay us
fairly. Just as we tell patients
the cost of a crown is high because
of the quality it will provide, so
the pay we demand is a reflection of
our value. If the dentists would
value us the issue of preceptorship
would be abolished.

I presently work in the Tampa Bay,
Florida area. I have been a RDH for
2 years and have 12 years exp as a
past assistant. I currently make 28.

not covered, and I pay for my own
Scrubs. I am working in the Sarasota
area. I average 10 patients/day with
40 min. prophy's three days per week
and 60 min. prophys two days per
week. I work Monday - Friday which
seems to be rare in this field, and
there are two doctors in the office
where I am employed. (10/2004)
I recently moved to FL and am making
$35 an hour (Clermont), 3 days a
week. No benefits though since it is
part time. (12/2004)
I am working in the Orlando area and
currently am working two part time

(10/2005)
I am working in Tampa, FL. I am a
2003 graduate and make $27/hour with
paid holidays. I work 2 days per
week. (12/2005)
I work in Sarasota, FL and make $250
daily seeing 8 pts a day, 1 hour
each. (2007)
Florida- I live in Fort Myers Fl and
have 2 yrs experience. My pay rate
is daily $290.00 (10/2007)
I recently graduated May of 2007 and
I work in Sarasota, Florida. I work
full-time, 4 days a week, 7 hours a
day with 1 ½ hours for lunch and see
7 to 9 patients a day. I receive
free dental for myself and family, 2
weeks paid vacation, and CEUs paid
for but no medical insurance,
uniform allowance or bonuses. I make
$275 a day and work in what has to
be the least stressful dental office
in the country and love it! (1/08)
GEORGIA:
The pay in the metro Atlanta seems
to start at about $23 per hour and
goes to $30 per hour. Most pay by
the day. If you work for a temp
agency the pay is usually 20 per
hour (they charge the dentist 37 per
hour), but the average if you temp
on your own is 250 per day.(1999)
I have recently moved from the
Atlanta, GA area. The salary range
in the Atlanta area is from $ 25 to
$35 /hour. The salary depends on the
part of town you work in. Many
offices also offer bonuses after a $
amount has been met.(1999)
I AM A HYGIENIST IN ATLANTA, GA AND
GRADUATED IN MAY 2000. I STARTED OUT
AT $30 PER HOUR RIGHT OUT OF SCHOOL.
(4/01)
I make 250 a day...have been a
hygienist for 17 years...I work 7
hours a day...produce as much as
1000 a day...sometimes more. 250 is
really good here in northwest
Georgia...(Rome)...not too far from
Atlanta..where pay is a little
higher. (8/01)
I work in Snellville, GA which is a
suburb of Atlanta and my daily
salary is $250 per day for a four
day work week. I don't have any
friends that work in Atlanta, but
from what I hear the salary is
higher in the city. (3/03)
I work 4 days/wk in Gainesville GA.
The dentist I am in practice with
takes a LOT of time off and always
pays me, so I am basically on a
salary. My gross pay in 2004 was
$46,960. Paid time off is the only
benefit, but it is worth
it. (3/2005)
I graduated in June 2005 and I am
making $27.50/hr in Watkinsville
Georgia.(8/2005)
I am a Dental Hygienist in Sandy
Springs, Georgia. I have been
practicing for just over 4 years and
currently make 285.00 per day with
full benefits,
paid CE, 2 weeks paid vacation plus
4 sick days. We regularly make our
monthly goals and receive bonuses. I
have 1 hour usually for cleanings
and 1 1/2 hours for SRP's. I think
if you would like to make this kind
of salary you need to be working in
a fee for service cosmetic practice.
My hygienist friends in the area
make a similar salary as well.
(9/2006)
I work 4 day a week @ $36 an hr &
increase to $37 at 1 year
Anniversary. Only draw-back is no
paid days off. But with this pay all
year I feel well compensated, plus
CEU’s are paid for and it is a
WONDERFUL working environment!!!!! I
did temp a few times in Atlanta,
asked for $40 an hour…they didn’t
bat an eye, I guess they didn’t mind
since I cut out the middle man (temp
agency). (9/2006)
I work in Snellville, Georgia 3 and
1/2 days a week equaling about 32
hours a week. I make $34 an hour
plus production. I see an average
of 11 patients a day, sometimes up
to 13! My wages equalled 60K for
2006. I have a great retirement
program and 1 week paid vacation
which equals $1200. I get a $300
Christmas Bonus. All of the staff
except for the dentist, get a paid
trip every year Thursday through a
Monday equalling $1000. I do not
get paid holidays or paid sick
days. I do not get health
insurance. The dentist pays for
uniforms 2 times per year, CPR, and
cont. education. He also takes us
out to lunch twice a week almost
every week! I think salary
comparison is so important, because
in my experience, even the dentist
does not know what the average
hygienist makes! (8/2007)
HAWAII:
Hi, we cannot administer Block
Anesthesia (yet!), just local
papillary anesthesia. We are in the
process of getting Hygienist's to do
Atridox and are able to do sealants
and N20 if needed. We start anywhere
from $18/hour to $25/hour with some
benefits if working full time,
depending on the doctor. Just out of
school, I started at $19/ hour with
a $1.00 raise after 6 months. I've
been practicing for 6 years and am
making salary of $47,000/year with
health benefits, dental benefits,
and parking (which is rare!) I have
friends that make $29 - $35 / hour
in periodontics or pediatrics, but
they have been there a while (10 +
years). Most hygienists work part
time. (Honolulu -- 3/01)
Here are some current wages here in
Oahu, HI.
- $35/hr working p/time at a perio
office in Honolulu.
- $32/hr working p/time at a gen.
practice in Honolulu.
- $30/hr working p/time at a gen.
practice in Kaneohe.
I have 2 years experience. Everyone
is required to be licensed in
administering local anes. I don't
have any benefits (sick, holiday,
401k, etc.) since I'm p/t but most
of my coworkers do. I did get
bonuses from 2 offices though- $900
total. Some CE is paid for. Someone
I know is working as a kind-of
contractor in Pearl City for
$45/hour. I guess it's not what you
deserve but what you negotiate.
Aloha! (3/2007)
IDAHO:
Idaho (north) seems to be an average
of 25.00+ many offer benefits for
full time. Full time seems to be 4
days a week.(1999)
In Idaho she earns more than $30,
but I would say the average is $25+
(9/00)
I am a 2002 grad and started out at
$26.00 a hour, and live in Cedar
Rapids, Iowa :) (3/03)
I am from Rexburg, Idaho and work in
Idaho Falls. I just graduated and I
am getting $28 an hour plus 2
bonuses a year and I will get a
raise after one month of work, then
I will be on a two year evaluation.
I am doing excellerated DH and it's
GREAT! Good Luck Hygienists.....set
the bar high! (9/2005)
I have been a hygienist here in the
Nampa/Boise area for 6.5 years. I
started out at $29.50/hour and am
now up to $31.50/hour. I am paid
hourly, not daily but I think that
depends on the dentist. I get two
weeks vacation/year and work five
days/week. The rate seems to range
$29-$32/hour in the Nampa area and
closer to $31-$35 in the Boise area.
(10/2005)
ILLINOIS:
The rate for Illinois seems to range
from $23-$32/hr. Most of my friends
who just graduated are making $25/hr
plus benefits. We are not allowed to
give infiltrations but we are
allowed to administer nitrous oxide
after taking a continuing ed
course.(1999)
I've been an RDH for over 15 years
in downstate Illinois (everything
out of Chicago is "downstate"). I
started at $7/hr 16 years ago and
now make $24/hr. For the rural
community I live in, that is
actually on the high end. My
benefits package is better than most
other RDHs in the area. I get full
uniform allowance (scrubs, shoes,
accessories), paid CE courses and
paid for the day, 8 paid holidays, 2
weeks vacation, quarterly bonus
based on production and an EXCELLENT
Christmas bonus. There are lots of
perks with this job that I've not
had elsewhere, such as a "family
comes first" mentality from the DDS.
I have extreme flexibility in
scheduling around family functions
which you can't put a price tag on!!
While every job has it's good and
bad, this one has been just about
perfect. I know I could commute an
hour or so and make a much higher
wage, but I also would lose out on a
lot of the current benefits I
have.(1999)
I live in the northwest suburbs of
Chicago and started out making $27
per hour as a new grad. Within a
year, I was given a dollar an hour
raise. However, I receive no
benefits, which I think is very
shady. (3/03)
I graduated in 2001. My first
location, a private practice on the
South side of Chicago, was $25 per
hr. Currently, I am employed at a
managed care facility making $29 per
hr. plus benefits and at a different
private practice in the western
suburbs making $30 per hr.
(part-time) (10.03)
I graduated in July 1999, and
started out at a salary of $18.00
per hour with no benefits at 3 days
per week, now I work 4 days a week
and two fridays a month at $22.00
per hour and recieve benefits that I
pay half for, as well as 5 vacation
days per year( the benefits took an
honest suggestion to D.D.S. that I
would look for another job unless he
helped with health insurance for
single female and payed for my
anesthesia course, which he did). I
am happy here, but it's taken a lot
of us working together as a team to
teach each other as doctor and
hygienist. I live in central
Illiniois. (4/2004)
I work in northern suburb of Chicago
and make $35.00 an hour with
approx 5 weeks total vacation, sick
days and paid holidays. I'm
experienced but no health insurance
and they don't contribute to my
pension plan.
The component where I attend
meetings recently had us fill our a
survey about the job market,
violations of the practice act and
also salary etc. They had approx 50
people complete the survey from
north suburbs and the hourly average
was $35.00. Some more/some
less-depended on full-time/part-time
and benefits etc. Submitted 4/04
I work in the Lincoln Park area of
Chicago. I work 4 days a week on
average and sometimes 4 1/2 days if
I decide to - usually I average 34
hours a week. I make $38.50 an hour,
2 weeks paid vacation, 3 sicks days,
receive a retirement match up to 3%
of my gross salary, paid Holidays -
Christmas, New Years, Memorial Day,
July Fourth, Labor Day and
Thanksgiving. Commissions on
bleaching and Sonicares. I can
pretty much block my schedule when I
want to and take time off as needed.
I get paid CE courses. Paid
uniforms. Paid CPR certification
renewal. Bonus's in past have
averaged around $1500 but we have
not received them the past two years
since the practice has been down.
(12/2005)
I'm in Chicago, graduated in the
spring of 2005 and currently earn
$34.00 per hour. I receive bonus for
Arestin as well. The going rate for
new graduates in Chicago is $35.00
per hour. Many of my classmates are
earning that and more. I have no
benefits with the company I work
with. Have health insurance through
my husband's plan. Get 1 week paid
vacation after one year of service
and, I believe, 3-5 sick days with
401k. Both dentists in both
practices I work in love that I can
administer local anesthesia. Both
practices are owned by a larger
company which owns 5 other
practices. Asked for a two dollar
raise. I think they can afford it...
;-) (1/2006)
I graduated in May 2004 in
Illinois-made 20/hr in Carbondale,
then moved to Louisville, KY for
2004-2005 and made 24/hr, with
health ins., paid CEs and 401k. Now
living in Seattle almost 2 yrs exp I
started at 40/hr, with health ins,
pension, 1 wk pd vacation after 1
yr, 2 wks paid for 2-4 yrs and 3 wks
paid 5 yrs and beyond, plus paid
CEs.(2/2006)
I temp as well as work PT at two
different offices. I live and
work downtown Chicago. In the city.
I make
39$ an hour at both PT positions. NO
BENEFITS! I temp from 38-40$ through
an agency. and my own temp
jobs I charge 40$. I see most
regularly advertised in the jobs in
the paper the hourly wage offered is
$35. (maybe why I have had a hard
time finding a permanent job?)
(1/2007)
1990 Graduate, no local anesthetic
certification:
St. Charles, Illinois (NW suburb of
Chicago) Part-time, $36/hour, no
benefits. (1/2007)
Bartlett, Illinois (NW suburb of
Chicago) part-time, 33% of
production excluding exams, 5 paid
holidays, 24 hrs. of
continuing education paid by
employer per year, Christmas bonus,
dental benefit. 10 years with the
practice. (1/2007)
Temp services in this area pay $35
- $40 depending on experience.
(1/2007)
INDIANA:
I live in Indiana. The salaries in
my city which is rather large range
from $18-27/ hour. It depends on a
lot of little variables. However,
you can drive 30 miles away and have
a completely different pay scale and
larger cities like Indianapolis I'm
sure are more in the $25 or more
range.(1999)
I graduated May 1998, so I've been
practicing a little over one year.
I'm the only hygienist in the office
(Staff is me, 2 assist, and 1 office
manager) - I'm on salary for 200/day
or 25 hour. I have full insurance
and at two years, I'll recieve a
401K retirement plan. I have a week
paid vacation, 5 paid sick/personal
days, and paid holidays. We also
have a bonus program in which we get
$150, $250, or $500 when we hit
certain totals at the end of each
month. I really can't complain about
money or benefits at all!(1999)
I work in a small town west of
Indianapolis. My salary is 50%
commission of all my production.
Sounds scary, but I have been there
for only six months and I have
grossed over $35,000. It was an
apprehensive move from an office I
had been in for over 15 years. But,
I realized that I had reached a
maximum level of salary ($41,000)
and benefits that this DDS could
provide under his current protocol.
Now, I receive 50% of all prophy's,
fluoride, x-rays, scaling and root
planing appts. My new office is much
more perio conscious and they do a
great job of keeping the hygienists
busy. I get to ordering of hygiene
supply's and head up the hygiene
department since I'm full time. We
have three part time hyg as well as
myself. It is a busy practice with a
large patient base. Making a move at
this point in my career was scary
but well worth it. We sometimes just
have to move forward and trust our
instincts. (12/00)
I am a student...I called a
temporary agency for dental only in
Indianapolis, IN...the rate is $31
an hour!!! (3/03)
I graduated in 2000 and live in
Northwest Indiana. I receive $27 an
hour with a $100 monthly bonus if we
make our production goal. I get 3
weeks paid vacation, 3 sick/personal
days, paid holidays, profit sharing,
uniforms, and CE.(3/2005)
I have been practicing for about 10
years. I work in Indianapolis. I am
employed by one doctor, but we
rotate between her 2 offices. I work
about 31 hours a week and make
anywhere from $300-700/day. I work
on commission, I get 35 percent of
everything I do plus $30/hr for any
office work, like calling patients
working on recall efforts and
helping out when one of assistants
is out.. We work in a very high
volume practice. The Dr. pays 50
percent of my medical ins. The Dr.
deducts for discount of ppo plans. I
get 2 weeks paid vacation at 900per
week. We have a matching up to 3
percent IRA plan. We get paid every
two weeks, so I get a check every
week (one from each office). My
check from office number1 is usually
$2300 every two weeks. My check from
office number2 is usually $800 every
two weeks. Which puts my annual
salary at about 67,000-73,000/year.
(10/2006)
I am in northern Indiana, make $30
an hour with medical insurance paid
for, 401K available with 4%
matching. We work with 'paid time
off' so we work for vacation time,
currently I get about 4 weeks
vacation a year. This is a pretty
good employer to work for! (1/2007)
IOWA:
The range seems to be between $25
and $30 per hour. Personally, I'm at
$29.35/hr. in Ames, IA., with 28
years of clinical experience. I've
heard that Des Moines is the highest
in the state (upper 20's to lower
30's). (4/01)
In response to your email about
salaries, I have some info for you.
I graduated from Des Moines Area
Community College in 1998. I
received the graduation report for
the 1999 hygienists which asks about
salary, and the starting wage for
a new grad was $23.00 per hour.
(4/01)
I would say that the average hourly
wage here, Eastern Iowa anyway, is
around 30.00 an hour. I make
29.00/36 hours a week, health
insurance, and of course free dental
care! (12/03)
I graduated in 2004, and work 36-40
hours per week at $23.50 per hour. I
am certified for both nitrous and
local anesthetic. After one year I
was bumped up to $25 per hour. I
live in the NorthEast part of Iowa,
and work at an office with two
general dentists and three other
hygienists. (4/2006)
I am an RDH in Ames, Iowa. I
graduated from the University of
South Dakota 3 years ago with a BS
in Dental Hygiene. I was earning $24
per hour in southwest MN at 3
different offices. I currently am
earning $27 in Ames, IA working for
a cosmetic dentist and a
periodontist. I do a lot of scaling
and root planing and local anes. and
am also able to give N20. I do not
have any benefits and only earn the
same number of paid vacation days as
I work during a week. I am at one
office 3 days and the other 1. I do
not know what the average is in
Iowa, but feel that I should be
better compensated. If anyone has
any input, I would love to hear it.
(5/2006)
KANSAS:
$19-23 (Beg) 23-25 (Exp) the same
for (EXD)(1999)
I work on an annual salary of
$62,000 per year, but I do hygiene
40 hours a week and also pay all the
bills, do taxes, payroll, etc. It is
an unusual position. The other
hygienists in our office are paid
hourly, average about $28.00 per
hour. We consider this a pretty
great salary for our area, (not
phenomenal) but our hygienists are
pretty great! (1999)
My dentist pays by commission. $15
hourly rate plus commission. They
get commission on x-rays, prophy,
mouth wash, whitening, exams,
etc..... So they can make anywhere
from 50-75K a year. (4/01)
I get paid by the day at a rate of
$240.00 Wichita, Kansas. (4/2004)
When I left my job in 2004
(Manhattan, KS), I was making
$40/hr. I didn't receive health
insurance, but I did get a week paid
vacation. (1/2007)
KENTUCKY:
In this area of the country
hygienists are earning $17 to $23 an
hour with an additional wide range
of benefits either given or not
given - it is all up to the owner of
the practice.(1999)
I work in Kentucky as a Dental
Hygienist. I have been at the same
practice for the past five years. My
salary is as follows: $25.50/hr. ,
paid uniforms, paid CE, 3 weeks paid
vacation, 1 week paid sick/personal
days, paid holidays (new years,
memorial and labor, 4th,
Thanksgiving, Christmas & Eve) plus
bonus, which isn't that great.
(250-450 each quarter) The draw back
is that I work in an office where
one of the dental assistants and one
of the office personnel feel they
work as hard as we, the RDH, do and
recent the fact that we make three
times what they do. It makes it very
difficult to go to work each
morning. As for the other dental
assistant, she is wonderful to work
with and considering Dental Hygiene
herself. And the dentist I work for
is very arrogant. Although he
controls his temper with me, he is
very hateful to a few others in the
office. So, just because it looks
good on paper, doesn't mean you have
a great job. Get this, he charges my
husband for me to clean his teeth,
even if I do it after
hours.(7/19/00)
Lexington, KY: $180 per day (Four 7
1/2 hr. days per week) plus
quarterly bonus. 1 week paid
vacation after a year, six personal
days, small life insurance policy,
paid uniforms, some paid CEs.
(4/2004)
Beginner 0 days on job (today was
the first) (kentucky lake area)
(Benton and Murray)
Job 1 (M.T.W.F.)
$25 dollars an hour 8-5 (1 hour
unpaid lunch)
1 week vaction first year
2 weeks after first year
Only bonus some paid CE courses and
CPR
Job 2 (Thurs. some 1/2 day Sat.)
40% commission on everything
No bonus (6/2005)
I graduated in May 2004 in
Illinois-made 20/hr in Carbondale,
then moved to Louisville, KY for
2004-2005 and made 24/hr, with
health ins., paid CEs and 401k. Now
living in Seattle almost 2 yrs exp I
started at 40/hr, with health ins,
pension, 1 wk pd vacation after 1
yr, 2 wks paid for 2-4 yrs and 3 wks
paid 5 yrs and beyond, plus paid
CEs.(2/2006)
LOUISIANA:
I have worked in 3 states the past 2
years. I was hoping to find more
info because I feel I'm being
cheated. I am currently in northern
LA. Small town. I get $200 per day
with holidays at full pay. I'm going
to be asking for $225 with a bonus
of 50% of anything produced over
$750 (not incl. exams). My average
production is $650. I've been a
hygienist for 14 years and they
wanted a "seasoned" hygienist.
(12/00)
I work for 3 different offices:
New Orleans - One day per week
$190.00, he 1099s me.
Gretna, (Westbank) Tue-Thur and
every other Sat $190 plus 8 days
vacation and paid holidays and lunch
everyday!!!
Harahan (Riverbend) Fridays-
$25.00 per hour 8:30 - 12:30 (4/01)
I have been practicing in the Baton
Rouge area for two years and
practiced in the New Orleans area
for 3 years. I am licensed to
provide local anesthesia. On average
I get paid $30-41 dollars an hour in
Baton Rouge with no benefits. My
pay in the New Orleans area averaged
22-27 per hour with limited medical
and retirement benefits. (3/2006)
I make $200 for 6-7 hour days. I've
been working for almost 3 years. 1
week paid vacation and a day for
every year you work there. Paid
holidays....paid CE courses. Paid
CPR training every year. He takes us
out to lunch every once in awhile
and some days we have "office
meetings" which is basically a free
paid day. I do know a recent
graduate that is making 230 plus
commission a day. (7-2006)
I work in Baton Rouge, LA and make
31.50 /hour with 2-3 weeks paid
vacation, and retirement benefits. I
will be asking for a raise this
month, hoping for $33/hour. I know
people making more than me and
people making less. It doesn't
matter here whether you have an
Associates degree or Bachelors or
whether you're anesthesia certified,
the pay seems to be the same and the
doctors don't really ask. (1/2007)
I have been working for 3 1/2 years
for a dentist in St. Francisville,
Louisiana. I make $275 per day and I
see around 7-8 patients (1hr per
patient). Medical insurance and 401K
is available. He purchases all scrub
tops and pants. I give local
anesthesia to all hygiene and
doctors patients. I also do
marketing for the office. I work 5
days a week (Mon.- Fri) and have a
very busy work week. I get 2 weeks
vacation and no paid holidays. This
was my first job out of hygiene
school. I love it! (1/2007)
MAINE:
I think dental hygiene wages run
from anywhere between $12.00 - 30.00
an hour. I think it depends on what
part of the state your in. The
southern part of the state seems to
be in the 20.00 dollar on up range
with and without benefits depending
on status of work. In the northern
section I think salaries range from
$15.00-$20.00. I am really not sure.
In the central part of the state the
range can be $20.00 up. Maybe
someone can notify you if this is
not correct. I work with two other
hygienist and our salary is in the
teens with vacation pay, ira
accounts, holiday pay, uniform, and
some ceu benefits. Two of us work
a 3-10 hour day and one of us work a
4-8 hour day. We are centrally
located near Bangor Maine. We can
also administer local anesthesia and
we do impressions for bleaching
trays. (8/01)
Just moved to Maine from Florida. I
also have practiced in NJ. In NJ I
was getting 30 an hour with
benefits...In Florida I was getting
anywhere from 22-25 an hour. 25 is
high. I lived in central Florida. I
have a friend who makes 300/day in
the south (Near Miami) (3/02)
I live and work in Maine. I work on
the coast and make 24.00 an hour
working part time. The only benefits
I have are a small, once yearly
uniform allowance. All CEU’s paid
for along with any mileage/food
costs. I do get some vacation time
and sick time. A short time ago I
worked in Northern Maine where the
pay was 20.00 an hour working full
time. I had uniform allowance, CEUs
paid for, a monthly massage paid for
by the employer, a 401K plan, and
free dental services…prophys and any
dental work for myself and direct
family. I made less per hour but had
far better benefits. (6/2005)
Our "going" rate is $30.00 in Mid
Coast Maine. (1/2007)
Maine- (Brunswick/Bath area) 35
hours in 4 days at $25/hour (or $280
a day) (EXP) with full health
insurance for my family, 3 weeks
vacation, 4 sick days, 9 holidays,
retirement fund, CEU's, uniforms,
dental care for my family- even my
parents. Another RDH (EXP & EXD)
works part time here- gets paid the
same but no retirement or health
insurance. Any temps. received $300.

MARYLAND:
I live and work in Maryland. I make
$245.00 a day and I work one 7 hour
day and two 7and1/2 hour days.
(1999)
I live in the Maryland area & my
benefits are as follows: $26/hr,
50-60 minutes per patient (yes, I
consider that a benefit- many
practices in the area only offer 40
min per patient), 1 hour for lunch
(some offices offer 30 min!),
medical insurance, free preventative
services, discounted restorative
services, paid vacation, paid bank
holidays, limited sick days,
flexible hours, assistants that will
help out (developing full series,
cleaning instruments, recording
probe readings) (with a smile!) if
necessary, & a boss that respects my
opinions. (1999)
I'm a dental hygienist currently
working in Maryland (Bowie Area). I
make 40/hr for 8 hrs/day (1 hr
unpaid lunch) with 2 weeks paid
vacation per year, and 6 paid
holidays. I see 7-8 patients a day
(1 hr per patient). I will say this
is unusually "cushy" for an office
in Maryland. (11/05)
MASSACHUSETTS:
B) 22-25... If your in BOSTON (EXP)
could be around $30!! A friend of
mine just had an interview and got
hired.. she's making $30 an hour..
with benefits and a pension Plan!!
We cant give Local here..
(yet)(1999)
I'm a hygienist practicing about 10
miles north of Boston, and am
thinking about working one day a
week in Boston. Do you know what the
average salary for Boston currently
is? I'm making $26/hr now. (12/00)
$30/hour, 50% Health Ins, $300 yrly
CEU allowance, 2 wks paid vacation,
4 sick/personal days, 3 paid
holidays (Thanksgiving, XMas Day and
New Years Day), matches IRA
contribution, free care for
immediate family members, and buys
our scrub top and bottoms, but not
shoes. FYI: just got a flier for a
temp agency in the area and they
offer $37/hr for temping (4/2004)
I work for a general dentist in
pittsfield massachusetts and I
currently making 30.00 hr. 2 weeks
paid vacation, one week sick pay.
(6/2005)
Boston suburb: $37.00/hour. Paid
CEU. Paid unifroms. 2 weeks paid
vacation. EXP. Work 24 hours/week.
(9/2005)
I work on Cape Cod, in MA and make
$35 an hour. (9/2005)
I work on Martha's Vineyard and make
$40/hr. My dentist offers paid
health insurance if you are 30+hrs.
He also offers some paid
holidays/vacation after 1 yr.
Dental procedures are 50%. I know
another classmate making $40 as
well, also on the Vineyard but am
not sure of her benefits. I worked
in another practice on the South
Shore making $36. Just thought I'd
contribute. (4/2007)
I am an RDH working in Belmont MA. I
work 36hrs/week and make $41/hr. We
get 8 days paid vaca and a few paid
holidays, plus full health benefits,
no retirement/401 K plans.
Practicing for 4 years. (2/2008)
MICHIGAN:
Hi, I have been a hygienist in
Michigan for 11 years now and I have
no idea what the pay range is and
would like an idea before I approach
my boss for a raise. I am only
making 19/hr with some benefits if
anyone can help me I would very much
appreciated.(1999)
Hi in MI I earn $23.50 an hr. I
think it is low. The Range for New
hygienists start at about $21.00 to
$22.00 and hr. In Oakland Co., some
hygienists can make $30.00/hr. I do
get benefits of 3 weeks paid
vacation and a pension plan also my
ADHA membership is paid as well as
CEUs. In interviewing for an
experienced hygienist it has been
$25.00/hr.(1999)
In regard to Michigan:
I earn 24.00 per hr. (B). I also get
medical coverage and dental work
free of charge. After a year of
service I will receive holiday and
sick pay, along with one week
vacation. I also temp. on my days
off and receive 22 or 23.00 a hour
depending on the agency. (1999)
I currently (EXP) 15 yrs have been
working for$ 26/hour for a
Periodontist
2 days per week with CEU's paid for
and 8 paid holidays 1 week vacation
after the 1st yr and 2 weeks after 3
yrs and 3weeks after 5yrs. I am
offered medical coverage but do not
need it which i would have to pay
the premiums on. Uniforms are paid
for WE get "well" days paid And have
a lot of schedule flexibility. We
have gone on STAFF vacations which
have been paid for by the Boss
(cruises Vegas etc.) Some might say
that PERIODONTISTS make more so they
offer more ! not true!! (I've worked
for both G.P's and Specialists) my
boss consults with other G.P.'s
ie..salaries and also believes that
just because I CHOSE to work
PART-TIME that I shouldn't be
penalized for that choice.
Realistically we would all like to
believe that no matter what state we
reside in that Experience gets you
more in terms of money or benefits
NOT TRUE!! I'm sure that New
graduates make close to or equal to
what I currently make. But I think
we all need to consider, that most
make large sums of salary DON'T
receive benefits and If you like
your Practice that makes all the
difference in your choices of where
to practice and whom you chose to
work for..
Temporary Services charge $30-32 per
hour that of which the Hygienist
makes $22-25 of that depending on
the experience.
Saturday hours command a higher
salary $27-30 per hour (1999)
I have 5 years hygiene experience
and 4 years of OJT. dental assisting
experience. I work in Washtenaw Co.
I am considered full time with 30-35
hours per week. I make $26. per
hour. I have paid holidays, sick
days and vacation days can be
negotiated or start at 1 week after
your first year. CEU's are paid for,
uniforms are paid (2 per year) free
dental, medical benefits provided.
401K retirement, a wonderful dentist
to work for, I can't go wrong!
(12/00)
I have worked for the same dentist
in Highland for seven years. I
currently make $30.00/hour, 3 weeks
paid vacation, 8 personal/sick
days/year (2 per quarter), uniforms,
CEU's, CPR, M-TH 32 hrs. I'm done by
1:00pm on Thursdays. Allows for a
long weekend. (6/01)
Hi! I live and work in Midland
Michigan. I make $23/hr, 4 days a
week, I receive 4 weeks paid
vacation, 1 week sick pay, uniform
allowance of $350/yr, 401K, and
flexible spending account that is
taken out of my check before taxes
to cover daycare cost, medical
insurance premiums, and medical
expenses. (2/02)
I work as a hygienist 3 days a week
for a general dentist. The practice
is close to South Lyon, MI., I make
$27 hour, 2wks vacation, no sick
days no personal days. (2/02)
North Western Lower Peninsula
Michigan -- I make 29.00 per hour
plus a 401k plan w/profit sharing
and bonus if we hit our goals.
(3/03)
I LIVE IN METRO DETROIT AREA OF
MICHIGAN. I WORK IN ONE OF THE NICER
AREAS AND MAKE 26.00 PER HOUR. I
HAVE ONLY BEEN A HYGIENIST FOR ABOUT
6 MONTHS. I HAVE SOME FRIENDS THAT
GRADUATED THE SAME TIME AS ME AND
ARE MAKING ABOUT 30.00 PER HOUR. I
DO NOT RECEIVE BENEFITS WHICH IS A
BIG DOWN FALL TO THIS JOB. I FEEL I
SHOULD BE COMPENSATED IN MY HOURLY
RATE BEING THAT THE DDS DOES NOT
OFFER BENEFITS. (12/03)
Starts at $22/hr (no exp) and I've
heard as high as $32/hr. (same
office reg raises) these amounts do
not include benefits or bonuses
because that really varies by
office. Northwestern Lower peninsula
of Michigan. (5/2004)
Part-time-$28/hour in Michigan. NO
benefits, except I get one week paid
vacation after one year...just paid
for the hours that I work...no paid
holidays, no sick days, no CE, no
license renewal, no health ins. (not
even an option to pay for it
myself...DDS doesn't offer that), we
close for two weeks out of the year,
I don't get paid nor do I have the
option to pick up extra days the
week before to make up for it.
(8/2004)
In the Grand Rapids/ West Michigan
Area I find $22-28 per hour standard
with $30/ hour easily for subbing.
(10/2004)
I am a RDH for Novi, MI, I make $28
hourly with Benefits and 1 wk paid
vacation and paid holidays. All CE
courses are paid for and uniforms. I
recently received my Local Anesth.
License and have not received
compensation for that and don't
expect to seeing as the DR paid for
the class. I once worked in Commerce
MI as both an Assistant and
hygienist and make $32 hr for all
RDH. I have friends working in Flint
and farm country making $25-30 hr.
In Michigan I was told that $25 is
the base hourly and raises the
closer you get to West Bloomfield.
(12/2004)
I work in Commerce & make $30 w/
benefits. We get 50% off tx. only
for immediate family (4/2006)
In mid-Michigan where I work 2 days
a week I earn $220 a day (8 hours/ 8
patients) I have a 401k that my
employers match contributions up to
a certain %. I also get a uniform
allowance which can be used for CEU
anytime I want. The 3 and 4 day
hygienists also get paid vacations
and health insurance.
We also get very nice Christmas
gifts and bonus. (1/2007)
I am a hyg. with 22 years of
experience working 1-2 days per week
in a general dentist office. I am
currently making $33 per hour. I
see one patient per hour, do
sealants and diagnodent. I am
getting ready to train for local
anesthesia which the dentist is
paying for. I get no benefits, sick
or vacation days. I occasionally
temp for $34 per hour. I know that
girls getting out of school are
having a very hard time finding a
permanent positions because the
economy is so bad. I think a lot of
hygienists that might have retired
are continuing to work due to
husbands being out of work.
(8/2007)
I live in Genesee County Michigan.
I have been a hygienist for 11
years. I accepted my current job 1
year 6 months ago. My rate of pay
is $30.00 per hour ($3.00 more an
hour than previous job). I do not
receive any benefits, bonuses, etc.
When I interviewed for the position
I asked for 4 weeks paid vacation,
as I did not want to make a lateral
move in the area of vacation days.
Jobs are very scarce in Genesee
County. I was very fortunate to be
able to make this move. (9/2007)
MINNESOTA:
HELLO I AM A NEW GRADUATE OF
NORTHWEST TECHNICAL COLLEGE,
MOORHEAD, MN. I JUST RECEIVED MY
LICENSE NUMBER IN THE MAIL TODAY. I
NOTICED THAT THERE IS NO WAGE
LISTINGS IN MINNESOTA. I WILL BE
WORKING IN NORTHERN MINNESOTA FOR
$18.00/HOUR STARTING PAY. HOWEVER A
LOT OF MY CLASSMATES MOVED TO THE
MINNEAPOLIS ST. PAUL AREA AND ARE
MAKING ANYWHERE FROM $22 TO $28/HOUR
SOME WITH BENEFITS SOME WITHOUT.
(7/1/00)
I work in the Twin cities (mpls)
area and am making $29.00 per hr. 4
days a wk with o.k benefits. 401k
after 2 yrs, the office pays for 1/2
of my med ins, all cont ed (once a
yr we go out of state to a seminar)
cafiteria plan and lab coats
provided (we dont wear scrubs) I
graduated in "98 and my classmates
are making anywhere from $24-31+ .
Many new grads ask for $32 hr and
get it! more power to them. (2/01)
My rate of pay in Minnesota is
$37.50 per hour.I work PT and am
paid hourly. I work 3 days per week.
I receive benefits that are
pro-rated. This is in a general
practice with 2 DDS. I have 19
years experience, 4 at this current
office. (9/2006)
MISSISSIPPI:
Beginning wages in South Mississippi
are about $15-$17/hr. and
Experienced go from $18-25/hr. No
EXD. Guess where they will go if
preceptorship comes to pass. (1999)
I graduated in May and received my
license in June. I wanted to offer
some salary information for the
state of MS for the salary page on
the site. As a new grad I received a
starting salary of $200/day. I know
at least one other person in my
class who received the same.
(10/1999)
2006 graduate:
Mississippi Gulf Coast
$190, 9-5 with a lunch, paid
vacation & sick days. I was also
offered $150 on one interview ( no
benefits), and $20/hour at another
interview (no benefits). (1/2007)
MISSOURI:
I'm adding Missouri to the list -
results from a survey done two years
ago tells me that the average pay
for the state is just under $22/hr.
(Many of the respondents did not
answer the questions on salary even
though it was an anonymous so I have
some concerns about it's accuracy)
Since this is the average - the
range I will have to guess from what
I know - so it may be inaccurate
also - maybe between $18 - 26/hr. In
MO we can become certified to do N2O
and infiltration and we can do STM
without addition licensure. This
does not, however, reflect an
increase in income. (1999)
I am from St. Louis, MO. and work
full time. My pay is 25/hr with
pension. (1999)
I'm in St. Louis, MO and most of my
former classmates are making $27 to
$30 an hour. One is on commission
and is making $72,000 per year. Only
a few are making $25 an hour but
they are working in rural area's.
Most have benefits...except the part
timers. (5/2002)
I currently work at an office where
I'm paid commission which normally
averages out to be around 36/hr.
Most of my friends also are paid
around this amount. Normally the
range is about 30-37 hr.(1/2003)
The updated wage for KC is
32dollars/hr and usually benefits
with full time. (3/2005)
I work about 45 minutes north of KC
in a somewhat rural town. We work
about 4 1/2 days per week. I am
paid hourly $30.00, 2 weeks paid
vacation, medical insurance, dental
(excluding lab fee) for myself and
my family, CE and uniforms paid. I'm
sure you can make more in the city.
(4/2006)
I am in St Louis and I work 3 days
per week, my hourly salary is 30.50.
I have a 401k that my employer
contributes to, and I receive 30
hours of vacation and paid holidays.
He also pays some ce, just depends.
(1/2007)
The typical rate in Kansas City is
$35 per hour. (1/2007)
MONTANA:
I have 20 year exp. The other two
hygienist have 15 and 10 years
experience. We work in a high paced
office. A progressive laser practice
we each make $28.00 per hour with 2
to 3 weeks paid vacation. Dentistry
is provided at a 100 % less lab
fees. Small uniform allowance, and
CU paid for . Great place to work .
I would say this is typical for
Montana. Finding medical benefits is
rare. ( 4/2004)
NEBRASKA:
In our state (as is probably the
case with others), it seems to
depend on where you live -- and it's
not consistently the larger cities
that have the larger incomes. From
filling in around the western end of
the state at several offices and in
talking with my classmates that have
stayed more central and east, I have
found the range to be anywhere from
$18/hour to $25/hour with the
$25/hour being rare and the
$21-23/hour being more typical. I am
currently making $21 at one office
and $22 at another office. (1999)
I can not speak for everyone in
Nebraska. But I and my friends make
between 22-25 per hour. When I sub
in another office I charge 30 p/hr.
I do know some people that make
28-35 and hour but that is in
offices where the doctor has a hard
time keeping a hygienist. I would
say the range in Nebraska is more
like 22-25 p/hr.(1999)
Students have been able to start
practicing dental hygiene with an
hourly salary range of $25-$30
(3/2005)
The going rate in our area (with a
dh school) is between $25-$30. If
you go to Lincoln or Omaha you can
make $32-$35. Some offices offer
benefits and some don’t. (1/2007)
I work 32-36 hours a week at 30$/hr
in Bellevue NE (just South of
Omaha). The office provides
$100/year uniform allowance, pays
for CE courses approved by the
dentist, IRA with matched
contributions up to 3%, and
reimburses for disability and
liability that I pay for out of
pocket. The office also pays for all
major holidays, 1 week paid vacation
the first year, and additional week
paid vacation every year up to 6
weeks. All preventative and
restorative dental work for self and
family is paid by the office except
lab fees. No health benefits for any
employee. These benefits mentioned
above were not offered at my
interview, but I insisted on them
before I accepted the position. I
also work on a fill in basis at
another office at 32$/hr in Omaha.
No benefits. I graduated in May
2006. The market is currently
flooded with dental hygienists in
Eastern NE and it is difficult to
find employment. Many of my fellow
dental hygiene classmates are
accepting a much lower wage.
Initially I thought 27$/hr was great
but now I know better (1/2007).
NEVADA:
Before I moved from Illinois, I
worked for a dentist who did not pay
well. I made $12.00 an hour and when
I found out the assistant made the
same amount--I was very upset. Not
because I feel I am more important
etc. than the assistant, but I had
gone to college for 4 years to get a
dental hygiene degree and she had a
high school education. Well, my
salary got bumped up to $16.00 an
hour but the dentist made me feel as
if I were not worth it. Well, I am a
very hard working hygienist who
believes in team work and I finally
did find an office that appreciated
my contribution--it just happened to
be in Nevada. I have assisted in my
office and found out assisting is
not "just sucking spit". It has
increased my awareness of how
valuable an assistant is. But the
fact remains, a hygienist has a
college education and has a license
to work directly in a patient's
mouth, therefore, should be paid
more than a dental assistant. But I
also believe everyone should work
together to provide the patient with
the best health care possible.
As for salary range--you are worth
what you are paid or want to be
paid, if you can provide the value
in what you can do for the office
and the patients. How many still do
plaque scores, or nutritional
counseling? Don't have time or just
don't want to make time? How many
have whitening programs set up in
your office? There are different
avenues of increasing your value to
office you work in. You just have to
be creative and motivated. It makes
your position more exciting and the
dentist sees the value you add to
the office--which can equal to
increase in salary or satisfying the
dentist reason for paying you so
much to begin with. (1999)
I am a dental hygienist who works in
Northern Nevada in a general
practice. I have worked there for 2+
years. I am paid an hourly rate of
42.00 per hour. One hour per adult
patient, 30 minutes for children. I
have paid medical, 2 weeks paid
vacation, 8 holidays, 4 sick days
and an employer paid pension plan. I
have approximately 14 years
experience in the field including a
CDA license. Our cost of living is
becoming close to California
unfortunately-high! (5/2004)
I currently am making $325 a day in
the Las Vegas area. I have my local
anesthesia and nitrous oxide
license, I get 60 minutes per pt.,
no benefits except preventive
services in my office. (3/2005)
I work in the SW part of Las Vegas
and am currently making $350 a day
and get 60 minutes per pt. We use
local anesthesia daily, as well as
provide our patients with laser
therapy. (6/2005)
I am currently working in Henderson,
NV. I have an assistant and make
$375 a day. No benefits. (6/2005)
NEW HAMPSHIRE:
New Hampshire salary I am not sure
of highest. But I know for sure
between $20 and $25 and hour. (1999)
I am an experienced hygienist in New
Hampshire. I make $34/hr plus
production bonuses (This is my first
month...I made $857 for my first
month), 5 vacation days the first
year, 3 personal days, paid
holidays, 401k, disability, paid
CEUs, and pay $100/month for health
ins for me and my husband. Not bad!
Along the Seacoast the pay ranges
from $29-36/hr depending on
benefits. (3/03)
Here in SW NH, an experienced RDH
makes around $24 an hour, depending
on the office. Of course, I've made
more working in prophy mills in
Nashua area with assisted hygiene
but this = BURNOUT! It's more
rewarding to have time to teach and
educate my patients about their
health. (10/03)
I practice in the Lakes Region of
New Hampshire. I have over 25 years
experience, have been with the same
office many years and am making $34
an hour. I receive 5 weeks off
(vacation, sick, personal or
whatever). The office does have a
health care plan I could participate
in, but since I am covered fully by
my husbands employer, I don't, so I
assume my salary reflects this. We
all get all our CE classes paid for,
and hotel costs if any, but need to
take time off without pay to attend.
We also get a uniform allowance each
year equaling $100 for each day of
the week worked (4 days = $400). We
get full family dental treatment. We
can put up to 15% of our pay into a
SEP retirement plan and most years
our employer contributes a
percentage. We have a yearly
'review' with the doctor and get
raises most years. (12/2005)
New Hampshire, Lakes Region-rural
area $36 hour.
I have 29 years experience and have
been with same dentist over 20
years. (1/2007)
NEW JERSEY:
Southern:
I currently make $30.00 per hour and
I receive vacation days that amount
to 2 weeks per year. (If I work in
an office 2 days per week, I receive
4 vacation days for the year.) I
only get holidays and sick days from
1 office. I have medical benefits
through my husband which is good
because no one offers them unless
you are full time!(1999)
I'm a hygienist from Atlantic City
area. I get paid 32.50 from both
offices. (1999)
I've been a hygienist for 5 years
now. I live in south NJ and make $26
an hour. I work for just one dentist
and I am the only hygienist in the
practice. I work 36 hours a week and
receive full medical benefits, paid
ceu and uniforms, sick days, paid
holidays and 3weeks paid vacation.
We also have a bonus incentive that
not only I receive, but the
assistant and receptionist as well.
(1999)
I am currently employed in 1 large
busy group practice. There are 9
hygienists working full or part
time. I work full-time, making $27
per hour, receive 3 sick days.
Vacation is as follows 1yr = 1wk,
2yr =2wks, 3yr = 3 wks. I've been
with this practice for 8 years but
they have only offered three of us
full-time benefits since this past
year. Full medical coverage is
offered paid and dental coverage for
ourselves except for anything the
lab needs to make. Immediate family
is 50% off. There is also a bonus
system which is split between the
hygienists and assistants, it is
currently be re-evaluated to meet
our needs better. I do love being a
hygienist and working in the office
I'm at. We are in Central/South New
Jersey. We have an assistant and see
adult patients every 1/2 hour.
I also worked in a small practice
for 7 years 1 day a week making
$28.50. I received 2 sick days and 2
vacation days a year. Adult patients
received an hour, children 1/2
hour.(4/2000)
Central NJ: Just graduated in
May(1999), starting off at $25 an
hour. 35 guaranteed hours whether
patients show up or not (went on
some interviews where the dentist
said first or last patient doesn't
show, you don't get paid)...$150
bonus possible each week, 6 paid
holidays, 3 paid sick days, 1 week
vacation after 1 year, full dental
for myself and my immediate family,
and possible medical if I need it.
Totally modern office, nice
conditions to work under, people are
great. (1999)
New graduate(1999), $28 an hour in
Central NJ area. Full-time hours.
(1999)
I have been a hygienist for 26
years. I am currently earning $29
per hour for a 22 hour work week. (I
started at $6.25 per hour in 1974
and that was BIG BUCKS) There is a
lot of flexibility in our office and
if you need time off it is easily
taken as the other hygienist and I
cover for each other. I am in
central New Jersey. Sick time=hours
worked per week you get in sick pay
per year (I get 22 hours per year)
Vacation=1yr - 1 week 3 yrs - 2
weeks 5+ years - 3 weeks If a
holiday falls on your scheduled work
day, you get paid. Full dental for
me and 1/2 price for immediate
family. Medical benefits available
as is profit sharing. We also get
reimbursed up to $200 for continuing
education courses. To all new
hygienists this is a great
profession especially for the
working mom at least in NJ. I got to
raise my children and worked a few
nights and Saturdays. (When I worked
they were home with Daddy. Made for
great relationship as he did baths
AND homework.) (9/00)
Hello, I am just out of hygiene
school last may and the temp agency
pays me $27/hr and they get about
$11, so the Dr. pays about 38. I am
in Jersey and wouldn't work for less
here either. I believe the
hygienists with exp get 30. (5/01)
I just graduated and have been
practicing for about four months
now. In one office I make 34 and the
doctor pays for half of medical, and
free dental. 1 week vac. after one
year, and paid holidays working 30
hrs. a week. In another office I
make 35 working one day a week. not
bad for starting out in new jersey.
If you ask it, chances are you will
probably get it. (7/03)
I was working in a horrible job with
a horrible boss for 2 years and I
was making $35 an hour. I finally
quit and decided to temp. It is the
best decision I have ever made. I
would never take another job without
temping first.
I graduated in 2002 so I don't
consider myself to have a ton of
experience but I think I do my job
well. I have been offered 2 jobs in
two very nice offices for $39 an
hour. So not only did I get rid of
my horrible boss but I got a big
raise, too. I live in Sparta, New
Jersey
(Sussex County) and the offices are
within a half hour of my home. My
old boss was further away in a
wealthier neighborhood. I also get
more time per patient at both
offices. Less stress and more money!
(9/2005)
I am in central Jersey. Salaries can
really range here from $35-$45/hour.
I am on the higher end w/ $42/hr,
but I work part time and have no
medical benefits. I do get holiday
pay, vacation and sick pay. Full
time employees in our office have
medical benefits so it is offered by
employer. I am the only hygienist in
the office. (1/2007)
(Monmouth county) -- I make 39$/hr
and work F/T (4 days average 30
hrs). I Get 10 days paid vacation
and 6 paid holidays. Uniforms are
provided and laundered in the
office. Some of the CE's I take are
paid for by the office. We're
supposed to be getting an IRA plan
where the employer will match up to
3 % of our salary. ie: If I make
50,000 /Year and I put in 1500 for
the year the Dr will match that
amount. So far it hasn't happened.
(1/2007)
The "going rate" for Livingston, NJ
is $45 per hr (with experience),
Probably. a little less if you're
getting benefits. (1/2007)
I live in Northern NJ. I started as
a hygienist in 12/2005. I started
in a large family run office, which
is where I am to this day. I
started with $36/hr with partially
paid benefits (maybe 50%) and 1 week
pay after 1 year. The hours are 4
days a week, about 32 hrs a week,
and some Saturdays. After about a
year I got a $2 dollar raise and am
currently at $38/hr. After a year
they pay about 75% of the benefits.
I am the only full time hygienist,
but there is a part time who comes
in on Mondays. (3/2007)
NEW MEXICO:
I worked in New Mexico for about
5yrs, it ranges anywhere from
$250-$300/day. (2/2006)
I'm in SW NM. Currenly I make
$330/day + a daily bonus of 35% of
production after $940. Annually, I
get 1 week paid vacation and 7 days
paid sick leave. (Next year vacation
goes to 2 weeks!!!!) I have health
insurance w/the practice paying the
employee portion. AFLAC
supplements are available (I
participate fully). I also
participate in the 401K - fully
vested from day one on employer
contributions. I have anesthesia
certification and make $20/day more
than the RDHs who don't. (1/2007)
NEW YORK:
I live in Long Island, New York. I
graduated May 1998. I have a
full-time job. I work 36 hours a
week, $25.00 hr. I'm the only
hygienist in the office, with two
assistants. I have full medical, 2
weeks vacation, 7 paid holidays, and
4 sick days. My CE's are paid for,
but I wish I could persuade him to
pay my association dues. (1999)
(Corning, NY) Salary range around
here seems to be $17.00 to $24.00.
I've got 2 weeks paid vacation, 3
sick/personal days per year, 7 paid
holidays, reasonable uniform
allowance, 401K/Profit sharing Plan.
I work 4&1/2 days per week (we all
have Fri. afternoons off, and work
Mondays from 11AM to 7PM), the other
hygienist works 4 days per week
(about 28-29 hrs/week). Plus, the
boss looks like Tom Cruise----eat
your heart out ladies. (1999)
I am an RDH in the Buffalo, New York
area. I have been practicing for a
little over 1 year and I am making
$19.50/hr. which is a little more
than any other RDH's that I know
around the area. (Western new York
is notorious for low paying hygiene
jobs) I get free dental and full
medical benefits. I work an average
of 33-34 hours a week, and my CE
classes are paid for plus 1 week
paid vacation the first year, adding
every year. (6/4/00)
I live in NY and the starting for a
hygienist in NYC is anywhere from
$40 and up. (2/01)
Salary in NYC : I work in a general
practice that advertises as a
cosmetic dentist and a
prosthodontist's office. The
salaries are $30 and $33. I am a May
2000 graduate. (4/01)
Buffalo NY RDH $22 hourly, 2 weeks
paid vacation, paid holidays, 5 sick
days, health insurance paid for,
year end bonus, paid continuing ed.
(6/01)
Sullivan County, NewYork 28.00 per
hour. (3/2003)
Long Island, New York: Just under 3
years experience, does local
anesthesia and nitrous, Make $33 and
hour. 2 weeks paid vacation. No
commission. Work approx. 25-30 hours
a week. Benefits are available if I
need them, but I do not. 1 personal
day and 1 sick day every quarter.
PLUS.. the doc I work for is a
hottie! (3/2003)
Buffalo, NY and surrounding
towns-$22-24/hr. Fulltime RDH-paid
vacation, paid holidays, CE, 401K,
scrubs and dental benefits for
immediate family. Some employers do
more for employees and many do less.
(5/2004)
Work Albany, NY area make
$25.00/hr., 2 wks. paid vac.,paid
holidays, full paid medical, paid
continuing ed courses, 401K and
profit sharing. Work 32 hrs. (4
days) week. (3/2005)
I work in Suffolk County on Long
Island. I work 2 part time jobs. One
pays $32.00/hour and the other
$34.00/hour. I have no benefits at
all at either job. (health
insurance, paid holidays, paid
vacation, sick days, uniform
allowance, paid association dues.
One doctor has paid for some CE's,
but those courses were for the whole
staff as well.) The closer you get
to NYC, the higher the wage. A
friend of mine works in
western Nassau County (the next
county west and closer to NYC). She
makes $37.00/hr. She graduated May
2004, I graduated May 1969 and been
practicing over 25 years. There is
quite a discrepancy in salaries here
on LI, alone. The further north
(above Westchester) and west you go,
the lower the salaries. Full time
work with benefits is not readily
available either. Most doctors
prefer to hire part time for reasons
you all already know. (3/2005)
I am a Beginner, just got my license
in September. Two of my part-time
jobs are on Staten Island and in
both of them I have $30 per hours,
no benefits. (11/2005)
I work on long island at 2 offices
both making $35 an hour. At one
office I work 24 hours a week and I
get full benefits, sick days,
holidays, leave of absence and
maternity leave. It's awesome, I
would recommend everyone to ask for
35 an hour, we deserve it. (2/2006)
I graduated in 2000 in Rochester and
began making $19/ hr with full
benefits. {No vacation nor
production with this private dentist
until after a year.} Almost 2 years
later, I negotiated a $22/hr deal
with an employer who originally had
hired me one day per week part time.
{One week vacation after one year;
two weeks after two years. They paid
1/3 medical benefits. }This employer
went to production wages in 7/04 and
I am making $26.75/hr. {24%
production} Not bad considering
other dental offices who take
advantage of you will low pay.
Nowadays, anything below $25/hr full
benefits in NY, you are being
scammed. I plan to move away soon
somewhere where I can make minimum
$30/hr w/ benefits and reflect the
quality care that I give. Anything
less is an outrage nowadays.
(5/2006)
I am a dental hygienist in NY,
Westchester County. I graduated last
year and now make $40/hr with full
medical benefits (after 3 months and
3 weeks vacation and 4 sick days
after one year. The average around
Rockland/Westchester is probably
anywhere from $37-$42. Orange County
is about the same also. Maybe a
little less an hour. I also temped
in an office in Woodstock that paid
$38/hour. (7/2006)
The "going rate" for Buffalo NY area
is between $17.00 (usually includes
benefits) to $25.00 (no benefits and
if you are really lucky!!) (1/2007)
Rochester, NY: 2/08 - I work 4 days
a week (34 hours). I graduated in
2000, currently working for the same
employer for the last 5 years. I
make $26.50 an hour, 95 hours of
vacation, i pay $9/a week for my
medical insurance, 401K he pays 10%
of my gross towards it, no
production, I received a $550
Christmas bonus.
I'm an EXD RDH for 2 1/2 yrs
practicing in Suffolk county. I make
$38.00 hr plus commission. Also
anytime he closes the office, we get
paid. Plus the dr i work for is
awesome! I also temp a lot and
temping jobs go for $39 on long
island and $45 in Manhattan on
weekdays. On weekends its $41.00 on
long island and $50.00 in Manhattan.
(9/2008)
NORTH CAROLINA:
$150-200 per day (BEG), $200 and up
(EXP), no expanded pay. Commission
rates earn higher depending on the
size of the city. Raleigh and
Charlotte pay more. (1999)
Hendersonville, NC pays $22.50 hr
then after 90 days $25.00 hr. Make
your own schedule, incentive
bonuses, paid vacation/sick leave, 3
1/2 day work week (paid for 4 days),
paid holidays, insurance (soon).
(1999)
I am fresh out of hygiene school and
I haven't taken State Boards yet,
but I have had a job offer for $27
an hour with absolutely no benefits
whatsoever. As a beginner I do not
mind but plan on looking for a job
with bennies later on. I live in
and will be practicing in North
Carolina. (6/01)
Salary range for eastern North
Carolina, New Bern, NC, esp. is
around 22-over 30$ per hr. Some
girls are on commission and make
over 300$ per day. I make 28$ per
hr. (3/03)
30$ per hr,2 weeks pd vacation,8
days paid holidays, paid trip to
national convention. No uniforms,
bonuses, do have a 401k. North
Carolina. (5/2004)
I am working in NC and receive
24.25/hr, 28 days paid vacation
which equal 7 wks vacation (4 day
work week), uniform allowance,
license renewal paid, CE paid,
medical insur., bonus' every month,
free dental work for the immediate
family and a great team to work with
(no experience). (8/2004)
I am in Asheville, NC. I work 3 days
per week, usually see 9-11 patients
a day (9-9.5 hour days). $250/day,
dental for immediate family,
$50/month uniform allowance and CE
paid for. Vacation time is 3 days
the 1st year, 4 days the 2nd year, 5
days the 3rd year, etc. We do not
have sick days but instead have well
days... If you are sick one day,
that is one less well day you are
eligible for. We get three well days
per year, if you are not out sick at
all that year, you get an extra
week's pay (3 days) at the end of
the year. If you are out one day,
you get 2 days pay at the end of the
year. Works well for me, I am seldom
sick. No medical but I don't care
because my husband is a state
employee- I get his benefits. I
don't know if license renewal is
covered. Nice doc, does good work
and cares about perio and your
input, I get along with everyone.
Christmas presents and bonus. 7 paid
holidays per year, regardless of
whether or not it would of been a
normal work day. (8/2004)
My salary is 270 per day...4 day
work week...Health insurance, dental
for immediate family, matching 401K
plan, life insurance, short term
disability (maternity leave),
uniforms, monthly bonuses, 3weeks
paid vacation (taken when you want),
CE, License renewal, 11 paid
(federal) holidays, Great work
atmosphere...Experience-8 years.
(8/2004)
I make 255$ per day, 2 weeks pd
vacation, about a weeks worth of
sick time, no uniforms or license
paid. Ce credits paid for, optional
health ins., but am covered by
spouse. Dental treatment for family,
preventative, any lab costs of
course would not be included. 401k
after 1 or 2 years, 10 pd holidays.
Experience 20+ years. (8/2004)
I work in Greensboro,NC. I make $245
per day, $100 per mo. for health
insurance, $100 per month for an IRA
account, uniforms, CE provided,
5wks. vacation-including federal
holidays taken with the office and 1
wk. paid vacation- your choice.
(9/2005)
I am a dental hygienist in the
Raleigh area with 32 years
experience. I work one day a week
and make $34/hour with no benefits.
I also work as a substitute and
charge $34-35/hour if I work for
myself, and $32-33 through the
temporary agencies. I have been
looking for a permanent part time
position for a year now, and have
had few call backs from my resume
which I faxed blindly in response to
newspaper ads. Most employers do not
include their name or telephone
numbers in the classifieds. The
temporary services say that things
are slow now for hygiene, but I
still wonder if I am too experienced
or considered too old to compete
with the girls graduating from the
new dental hygiene program in this
area. Has anyone else had the
feeling that they have aged out of
hygiene, in spite of clinical
proficiency, well honed patient
management skills, and a genuine
desire to work in their profession?
(10/2005)
I am currently a RDH in NC in a
rural area and I was offered $26.00
per hr(beg) I have 401 k,medical ,
and dental insurance also payed ce
credits. (7/2007)
NORTH DAKOTA:
OHIO:
Just a quick note--Cleveland area--I
have been practicing for about 4 1/2
years now and have made a range of
wages. I worked for a large "clinic"
style practice and made about 24.50
an hour (right out of school). At
that practice I had one week paid
vacation after one year and two
weeks after two years. I also had
full dental and medical benefits.
Anyway, In private practice I am
making about 23.50 an hour with a
uniform allowance, one week paid
vacation per year, 6 sick days per
year and 5 paid holidays. He also
takes us to at least one CE per year
(paid for and paid to be there). I
have several friends that are recent
graduates and are starting at 24-26
an hour (needless to say I will be
asking for a raise at my next
review!!) I also hear you can make
up to 30+ an hour in this area if
you don't need health coverage.
(12/00)
I'm a hygienist in Columbus, Ohio
and the rate is anywhere from $25-33
per hour.
Plenty of hygiene jobs. I'm paid 240
per day or $30 per hour. I work 3
days w/ patients and 1/2 day on wed.
w/o (I do insurance billing).
Wonderful dentist and nice benefit
package for a "part-timer". (6/01)
I'm in the Cincinnati, Ohio area and
at the office I was at for 5 years,
I was getting around $160/day, and I
was convinced I was being underpaid.
Now this new job I just got it's
going to be $200 day. So now I know
I was underpaid for this area.
(8/01)
Ohio here. Depends on the part of
the state that you live in. Big
cities....like Cleveland,
Cincinnati, and
Columbus...$30-34/hr. Southern
Ohio....depressed economy....jobs
hard to come by....DH School...stiff
competition....$19-22/hr. Northwest
Ohio...depressed economy......about
around....$19-22/hr. Eastern half of
the state.....Zanesville, New
Philadelphia...have absolutely no
clue. (5/2004)
I work in Lima, Ohio and currently
make 28.00 per hour. I work 16 hours
per week and get three weeks paid
vacation per year, free dental work
and the dentist buys our lab
jackets. I have no health benefits.
(6/2005)
For Columbus Ohio the going rate is
$32-34/ hr with benefits. Most offer
paid vacation, CE, holiday pay and
sometimes insurance. My benefits are
currently ( employed for 4 years,
with 18 years experience. 2 weeks
paid vacation...3 weeks pd after 5
years. 1 week sick pay. 7 paid
holidays. Paid CE :approved first by
the Dr but rarely turned down. 3%
match to a 401K. Fully paid health
insurance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And
best of all....we all punch a
timeclock so we are paid for every
second we are there! (1/2007)
In Ohio, even with 25 years +
experience, you can only expect to
make around 25$ an hour. The only
offices that pay better are the
crappy ones where they have to pay
more to get people to come and work
for them. We have so many hygiene
schools in Ohio that jobs are
beginning to be scarce and the good
ones are few and far between. I made
less than $40,000 this year after
more than 25 years at it - although
I do only work 4 days a week. I am
not complaining, I have a good job,
a good boss and I am very lucky, I
just want people to keep it all in
perspective. (1/2007)
Columbus Ohio. My salary is $32/hour
+ bonus (between $100 - $200 twice a
month). I have not had a raise in 5
years, but with the bonus, the
salary seems fair. (3/20007)
OKLAHOMA:
For the area apx. 90 miles SW of
OKC, I get paid 30% commission of
what I produce. I have worked for 11
months and avg. $25/hr. I work 215
days out of 365.I have off most
fridays and six weeks unpaid
vacation per year (the DDS is out of
the office and I can't work without
the rest of the staff. They all get
vacation pay, but not the RDH :o) I
do not get sick or personal time
either. ).They pay half of uniforms.
I get one hour for adults and 30 min
for kids. My family gets all dental
tx free. I have a 401K, and get CE
paid for. The avg wage in the area
in $8-10/hour so hygiene pays well.
(1999)
I work in central Oklahoma for a
tribal agency. I have 3 years
full-time experience, expanded
function which includes anesthesia
and nitrous. My salary is $45,000
per year with full benefits for 4
1/2 days per week, this is low for
the area and is after a raise. Most
new graduates in Oklahoma start at
$200 per day, $225 is very common,
up to $300 per day in some
areas. Benefits in private practice
are practically non-existent.
(5/2002)
For the OKC area it seems to be
$250.oo for 8 hour day. And the only
way I've ever been paid is daily or
commission. (3/2003)
Oklahoma opened up a new DH school
and this was the first year for a
graduating class. That makes three
DH schools sending 20 students each
...that is 60 new DH each year. All
of sudden we have a saturation of DH
and I have heard of recent grads
taking jobs for $180.00/day. I was
receiving $300./day, when I ended my
last job in Feb. I recently took a
new job and had to take a pay cut.
(10/2004)
I work in Tulsa... I've been at my
office since i graduated 2 1/2 years
ago. Ii work 4 1/2 days a week. I
get $285/day, plus paid holidays, 4
paid sick days (you get $100 per
unused sick day), 5 vacation days
for your first year plus 1 day for
each additional year you're there.
they buy all of our scrubs (one for
each day) we get new sets about
every 2 years. we also have a 401k
and they offer a health savings
account medical insurance. they also
pay for my ce courses/travel
expenses. We have a large office-2
docs, 5 front office, 5 assistants,
I'm the only RDH. (1/2006)
I live in Edmond, OK (suburb of OKC)
and work at an office 3 days/week. I
get $32.50/hr plus 10 days paid time
off, 401K with 4% contribution
match, uniforms, paid CE, random
cash bonuses, paid holidays, and
GREAT team members. I've been told
that the average for this area is
$250-$300/day with no benefits.
(1/2007)
I am a Beginner, in Tulsa Oklahoma,
$300/day, working 4.5 days/week, 2
uniforms/year, paid vacation. Free
dental for immediate family(if lab
fee, pay it). No medical benefits or
401k (5/2007)
OREGON:
I saw your page and thought I would
contribute to a blank area... my
wife was a hygienist in Oregon for 5
years (we now live in Idaho) and
earned between $25-$29/hr. working
34 hours a week, no benefits. (9/00)
I am in Portland, Oregon. I work two
jobs, one is a base pay of 10
dollars per hour plus 20% of
anything done in my chair (which I
have two). The most I have made in a
day has been 500.00 the least is
200.00. I work 4 days a week. I am
expected to help out around the
office when there is a no show. The
other one is 31 dollars per hour one
day a week. No benefits on either of
them. I am pushing for medical ins.
LA is legal. (4/2004)
I have been working in Hillsboro
Oregon for 3 yrs (near Portland) and
make $32/hr, accrued sick and
vacation pay and med ins for me and
2 dependants up $250 per month, all
dental is done at no charge except
lab fees, right now I am on
maternity leave--no pay. (5/2004)
This is for the greater Portland
metro area, however it seems
consistent for the whole state give
or take a $1/hour.
I have 2 yrs experience. Currently
make $35/ hour. This seems pretty
normal.
Benefits: I get 2 weeks vacation (8
days) 4 days sick pay, 5 days
holiday pay if they land on a work
day, $200/year scrubs, 2 CE classes
paid/ year, full medical for myself,
and dental for me and husband (I pay
the lab fee + $10 per appointment
for supplies).
Duties: We can give local
anesthesia, localized Antibiotic (Arestin), and
nitrous, we can work when the Dr. is
gone, (we just can't give Nitrous
when he is gone.) We have limited
diagnostic allowances, i.e. we can
diagnose services that are allowed
to be administered by a
hygienist (called a hygiene
diagnosis)
Production: I produce anywhere from
$900 to $1,800 a day, with the
average being $1300. I get 60 mins
per prophy/ perio maint or 1 quad
SRP, 30 mins kids, 90-120 mins for 2
quads SRP. I do not have an
assistant, but have 2 rooms. front
office helps me perio chart when
needed.
Temp Agency: ranges from $31 to
$34/ hour; depends on experience
Other Salaries: I know hygienists
who make from $31 to $38.50/ hour.
Benefits range a great deal, but
most have some sort of medical if
they work 3+ days/ week. I have
heard of hygienists making $40 +
bonus, but I don't know them
personally. I don't know any
hygienists who make less than $31.
Hourly wage is by far the most
common type of pay. (vs. per diem or
commission)
Cost of Living: Moderate I guess. A
2 bedroom apt. $700-$800/ month.
Real estate is somewhat expensive. A
1500 sq. ft. 3 bedroom 2 bath house
that's not trashy is a minimum
$180,000....but its probably higher
than that...
Oregon is a great place to be a
hygienist and despite 4 hygiene
schools in the metro area, we are in
demand! But, yes, it does rain a
lot. (4/2006)
I work in Beaverton, OR and I make
38/hr plus 15% commission on add-on
services such as Fluoride gels,
treatments, whitening stuff, etc. I
have full benefits including 8 days
vacation, 3 days sick pay, scrubs
and 1 pair of shoes a year. All CE
paid for in full plus hourly wage
for the class. Medical for myself,
dental at lab cost for me and my
family. I also get paid holidays - 6
I think - if they fall on a work
day. If they fall on the weekend,
the office is closed that next
Monday and we get paid for it. My
doctor is sweet to us and buys us
flowers occasionally or lunch. I
also know personally hygienists in
Lake Oswego, Portland, and Tigard
who make 40 hour plus commission.
There is a shortage of well
qualified hygienists in the Portland
Metro area - I hope nobody is
working for less than 34/hr!
(4/2006)
I am in Portland ,Oregon and I work
with an corporation. I am on 25%
commission or $31 per hour, which
ever is highest. I get medical and
dental benefits, pto and 401k. I
work 5 days a week, and holidays are
paid. (1/2007)
Hello - I work in Portland, Oregon
at a family/cosmetic/practice in
downtown. I commute 30-40 minutes
one way 4 days a week. I have been
with the practice for over 2 years,
starting at $34/hour and now up to
$37/hour. I have full medical (boss
pays monthly premium), paid holidays
if it falls on scheduled work day, 2
weeks vacation (8 days), and monthly
bonuses ranging from $50-$300. I am
able to my own dental hygiene tx
plans and schedule pts with the time
I need. Teamwork is huge and the
hygienists are great at helping out
wherever we can. Portland is a
FABULOUS place to be a hygienist!
Alot of independence as a
professional team member. We work
very closely with the docs and tx
planning. OH....LA, Nitrous legal
(however, I do not carry a nitrous
permit for personal reasons.
(4/2008)
PENNSYLVANIA:
Hi all, I have found that beginner
hygienists make $ 21-22 hour.
Experienced make $25-30 hour.
Commission based pay is somewhere in
the neighborhood of 35%. I see
hygiene assistants are becoming more
popular here. I live and work in the
Philadelphia suburbs. (1999)
I live and work in central
Pennsylvania, near Bucknell College.
In our area the pay is around $15-19
per hour. I have been a hygienist
for three years and make $16.50 per
hour (usually 35-40 hrs per wk.),
have medical insurance, 6 paid
holidays, 2 personal days (paid at
end of yr unless used), 2 weeks paid
vacation, paid CE credits, and
bi-monthly bonuses. I work a four
day work week, and have an hour for
lunch. I have worked for the local
temporary agency and they start you
out at $15 hr. In our area this is
considered GREAT money, but then
again in rural areas like this the
living expense is a lot less than
the city. (1999)
I recently started (B) in York at
$24 an hour. I work 3 days a week.
Some of the benefits I receive are
$100 year uniform allowance and $150
toward CE courses. (12/00)
I am a recent grad. I was just hired
for my first job in Hamburg, Pa
(Berks County). I start at 25.00 and
hour plus I get 5% commission
from any services rendered (other
than standard prohpy or bitewings.)
It is 32 hours a week, no benefits,
but only a 3 1/2 day work week--no
Saturdays!!! I am a resident of
Schuylkill County and through job
hunting here I found one dentist who
pays 21.75 an hour plus benefits and
401K and then I found another who
wanted to start me at only 20.00 an
hour, part time, no benefits. So,
the opportunities are there...you
just have to look around and don't
sell yourself short! I'm glad I did
not settle for the 20.00 an hour
job! Sometimes it is worth driving
for a few more miles to get the
better wage. (9/2005)
I am a new graduate in Philadelphia
and I've been hired for a full time
position, pending my NERB scores and
application for licensure. I'll be
starting at $32/hour with medical,
401K and 1 week paid vacation. Now
all I have to do is wait :). Other
girls I graduated with are getting
around the same, from those who told
me I'm hearing a range of
$25-$33/hour. (9/2005)
Here in NW Pennsylvania (Meadville)
the pay is much less than other
areas of the country. I am currently
being paid $25. an hour. This is
high/normal for the area from what I
can find out. I have heard of
hygienists only making $19, and
rumor has it that there are a few
making $26 or 27. If you are full
time, most offer vacation, sometimes
insurance and retirement. Some offer
sick days, some don't. Being part
time, I don't get any benefits.
(1/2007)
Philadelphia suburbs, beginner,
$32/hour, 1 week vacation. I get
around $35/hour when I temp in the
area. (6/2007)
I have been a hygienist with over 22
years of experience and live in the
southwestern area of Pa. the range
for Hygienists in our local area can
be from 20 - 35 an hour. our office
will be moving to a complete
commision based salary of 29%. we
are all very scared! with this
change they are taking all of our
holiday, vacation and ce pay. I may
be looking for a new job. is this
the average for commision in this
area? (9/2008)
RHODE ISLAND:
Rhode Island's beginning rate is
20-22hr. With experience 23-25hr. No
expanded duties at this time is
allowed. Only Maine, NH, and Vt has
expanded duties in the northern New
England area. R.I. is suppose to
have the expanded duties within a
couple of yrs. according to a
college professor we had. A R.I.
hygienist will be maxed out at
24/25hr. MA. for beginners is
24-27hr. The higher end of this wage
is if you have prior dental
experience. Although in R.I. most
drs. are paying 20/hr to start with
no experience. (1999)
I am a hygienist right out of school
and my starting pay is $28/hr. I
turned down a job one mile away for
$30/hr. I have been told by my
fellow graduates of 2003...that they
are all making $28-32/hr to start in
and around the East Bay Area of
Rhode Island. (12/03)
SOUTH CAROLINA:
I work in the upstate SC area. My
salary is $147/day, medical
insurance, and paid holidays. (1999)
Charleston, SC starts out at between
$19-22 per hour. Insurance usually
offered, but too expensive to get.
(4/01)
I recently substituted in an office
and was paid a 40% commission on my
production. I averaged $240 per day
on commission. These were not real
productive days as I only saw 8
patients per day and most of them
were not due for x-rays. I
normally work part time in an office
where I have been for over 10 years
and make 23$ per hour, receive some
continuing education, a quartly
uniform allowance, and 1 week paid
vacation. Seems that
working commission is the best way
to go. (10/02)
Columbia, South Carolina:
$25.00/hour, 2 weeks pd vacation, 2
sick days per year, SOME CE, that's
about it! (4/2004)
Charleston, SC area - Beginning RDHs
make around $23 per hour without
insurance. Experienced RDHs make
between $24-$27 per hour (not sure
about insurance). All injections
allowed except for inferior alveolar
nerve block. Only nitrous oxide
monitoring allowed. (9/2005)
I live in Columbia, SC and have been
practicing for 2 years. My starting
pay was $25/hr. and is now $28/hr.
with $125 a month insurance
allowance, paid CE, paid ADHA and
License dues, paid malpractice
insurance, 6 paid holidays, 2 weeks
paid vacation, 1 week paid sick
leave-although there are
compromises. All of my equipment is
old and we are not able to order new
instruments or products. (8/2006)
SOUTH DAKOTA:
TENNESSEE:
I live in Tennessee near Chattanooga
and I work in a large 3 DDS practice
with 9 other women. I get a base
rate of 130/daily plus 25% of
everything I produce over $400./day.
This makes my average about
25-26/hr. I also receive paid
holidays, uniforms provided with
laundry service, 1 week paid
vacation, and free dental care for
me and my immediate family or lab
costs if applicable, parents and
siblings get dental work at
discounted rates, health insurance
is available if I needed it. (1999)
I have one to add for Memphis, TN.
As of 7/99, pay ranges from $20 to
$25 hourly.
An experienced RDH probably could
expect to make $23 on up. If there
is commission involved, the pay is
usually higher. It is difficult to
pinpoint though, it varies
drastically whether you have
experience or not.
Some dentists prefer a newly
graduated RDH so they can train them
the way they want them w/o the
baggage of bad habits...and others
prefer a RDH w/ experience for their
speed/production. Benefits vary
along w/ salary...again, it just all
depends on the DDS. (1999)
I have practiced D.H. for 21 years
and love it! I have a full time hyg.
assistant and a part time hyg.
assist. to schedule appointments.
They both have an expanded function
degree. I am salary plus commission.
Last year I made around $75,000,
$15,000 was put in my retirement by
the DDS, and 2 weeks paid vacation.
Not included in this amount was the
commission I pay my
assistants...approx. $5,000 per
year. I live in Jackson, TN. I am
sending this info. so more
hygienists will demand the salary
they deserve!!! (4/01)
I would think at least 185 - 200 per
day for 8 hours I know I wouldn't
take anything less than that. (8/01)
I live in Knoxville, TN and for (b)
salary anywhere from $200 -225/day
w/ benefits.(exp) 225+ w/benefits is
the norm here. (1/03)
2007 - Chattanooga area -- 40%
commission on services 30% on
products, 2 wk paid vacation, 6 paid
holidays at a base rate, uniforms
provided, free dental for me & my
family, paid CEs if required to
attend by office, health ins.
provided office pays 50% of
premiums, 2006 salary was over 63K.
(1/2007)
I work part time in 2 different
offices- one is in downtown
Nashville TN, one is in a suburb 30
minutes away from Nashville. In the
Nashville office I make $30.00 per
hour with no benefits and in the
suburbs I make $34.00 per hour with
no benefits. I asked for more in
the city, but they wouldn't budge.
(B) July, 2007
I have 6 years
experience and have worked for this
dentist for all 6 years. I am
allowed 1 hour for each adult
patient and 30 minutes for each
child. I work 4 days per week and am
paid 32.50/hr, 2 weeks paid
vacation, and paid holidays when
they fall on work days. I provide
temp services to a few dentists and
am paid $350/day. (9/2008)
TEXAS:
$23-25 (B) 27-30 (EXP) no LA.,
(nitrous& sealants allowed) (1999)
Texas.....I make 29.00 an hour but
am paid by the day....2 weeks
vacation....1 week sick leave a
year....paid holidays....3 personal
days a year....4 days a
week....medical insurance is
provided, but like many others I am
on my hubby's...so I get an addl
100.00 a month to compensate for
this.....free preventive for me and
family with discounts on any needed
work...I have not paid a dime thus
far....I, too, work with a bonus
incentive....I get an extra 25.00 a
day if I produce over
625.00....which I do most days....
...Hygienists are in great demand
here...in my area...Austin....you
can almost write your own ticket....
(1999)
(B)Exp. 13 years, 4 day workweek,
East Texas Area, $175 per day, 8
paid holidays per year, 8 paid
vacation days per year, 8 paid sick
days per year, vacation can
accumulate, sick pay cannot
accumulate over 64 hrs. 40lK,
however no medical benefits
available. Dentistry free to
immediate family with exception of
lab fees. (1999)
I am still a dental hygiene student
in Texas, but I have many friends
who are Hygienists and in the
central Texas area, are making from
$225 per day to $60K per year,
depending on where you work. The
military base at Ft. Hood hires DH's
thru contractors, and...get
this...pay the contractors up to
$90K yearly for the DH's, who get
paid about $50K annually. Go
figure.... I have several friends
who work in Austin and LOVE it, they
are also well paid. (1999)
I practice in Texas. The Dallas
area. I am paid 290.00 a day
+benefits . I work 3 1/2 days a
week. (9/00)
$40 per hour in north central Texas.
(3/2003)
The going rate here in Sugar Land,
TX., is $30-34 per hour for
hygienists. (3/2003)
$28/hr, medical, 401(k), 5 holidays,
$300 CEU, free dental to immediate
family,1 week paid vacation after 1
year, 2 after 2 years, and 3 after 5
years. (5/2004)
San Antonio, TX: $220.00 per day and
$27.50 per hour on 1/2 days, no
insurance, 1 wk paid vacation after
1yr, 4 sick hours per month, some CE
courses paid, paid holidays
(thanksgiving, Christmas...etc.
(5/2004)
I live in Austin and make $28/hour
with 2 years experience. i am making
below average, however i did have to
settle because there are NOT many
jobs here and there haven't been for
at least a year. my first job in
Austin paid $30/hour and I was right
out of hygiene school. (5/2004)
I live in Central Texas (Killeen).
The going rate for this area is
$250.00 per day. (10/2004)
The salary for the Houston, Texas,
area is from $30.00 up to $35.00 per
hour. (3/2005)
$32 an hour here in Houston (3
/2005)
I am a recent graduate and I work in
Houston Texas. The starting salary
now for beginners is 28-32 an hour
depending on the area. It's not easy
to find employers that offer health
benefits though but there are always
job openings. (9/2005)
I work in Austin Texas. I have been
offered a job for $40/hr. I have 10
yrs experience (4/2006)
Just a note to add to the Texas
section of your webpage. Last month
(Aug 2006) I just started in 2
different offices in Austin, TX ...
Office #1 (3 days a week) $275/ day
& few benefits; Office #2 (1 day/
week) $300/ day. I've been a
hygienist for a little over 3 years
(EXP). (9/2006)
The going rate for out of school
graduates here in Houston is
$30-32.00 per hour. The going rate
for seasoned hygienists is $35.00
per hour. I have a full-time job
now, and my benefits are 8 weeks of
PAID VACATION, and all other regular
holidays that fall on one of my days
to work (Mon-Thursdays) are also
PAID. My employer does provide
medical benefits. All of our dental
work is taken care of, and any big
procedure, like a crown or bridge,
we just pay the lab bill, which
means that the Dr. takes whatever
our insurance pays. (1/2007)
I have been a hygienist for 3 years
now in the San Antonio area and get
paid $31 an hr working M-TH. I get
paid CE, family leave, Health ins.,
paid holidays, jury duty leave,
malpractice ins, medical leave, 3
paid sick/yr, paid vacation, paid
scrubs and maintenance of lab coats,
bereavement leave, retirement, and
free gym membership! The reason I
am letting people know what my
benefits are is so that they know
what they are worth. Coming out of
DH school you will take just about
anything! Hygienists are big
producers for the practice and I
strongly believe a hygienist should
get paid well and have some type of
benefits; especially health
ins. Since we are exposed to every
disease possible. Don't ever
settle for less than $30 /hr.
(5/2007)
I worked in Austin, TX as a new grad
and made $265 daily. 10 pts a day,
45 min each. (2006)
I am (B) hygienist in Dallas. I make
35 an hour and get 10% of whatever I
produce over $1200 a day. My
benefits include 1 week paid
vacation, 1 week sick pay, paid
holidays, uniform allowance, 401K
(they match up to 3%), $200 in CEs a
year. (8/2007)
I live in Central Texas (Killeen)
and with one year of experience have
already been offered 3 jobs that pay
$34 an hour plus full benefits.
Brand new hyg. probably make $32
with benefits. Benefits include-
uniforms, CEs, insurance, dental, 1
week vacation (goes up as you work
there), 4 sick days per year, 6
holidays per year, 401k,etc. This is
a great place to work if you can get
in with the right practice! I would
NOT take less than $34 an hour. This
is esp. great to me because I moved
from Alabama where I was making
$16/hr.
(9/2008)
UTAH:
My salary in St. George is $27.50
per hour. (4/01)
I am licensed in LA and N20, I make
29/hr and 230/day in Northern Utah (ogden
area) (10/2005)
I am a hygienist in Kaysville,
Utah....I get paid $30.00 an hr with
no benefits nor holiday pay. I have
2 yrs of experience and have a EXP
license. Just moved here from
Seattle...about a 35% decrees in
pay. (4/2007)
VERMONT:
I make $28.00 per hour. I have one
week vacation after the first year,
two weeks of vacation after the
third year and three weeks of
vacation after the fifth year. We
have 6 paid holidays. We do not get
personal or sick days although the
Dr. will sometimes pay us for an
unexpected day off such as the day
after Thanksgiving. We are taken to
Yankee Dental Conference ever other
year. Everything during this event
is covered. We even get a nice
dinner out and a show . Any other CE
is generally covered if it is within
reason. There is no specific uniform
allowance. I purchase my own
uniforms and shoes. The Dr. offers a
Simple Retirement plan (He matches
3%). Health Insurance is offered if
needed. I do not need this so I am
unsure of the particulars. I believe
the employee pays a percentage of
the cost. Your hourly rate of pay
may also be a little bit different
if you need this benefit. Dental
care is free for immediate family
members. I am fortunate to work in a
great office. The Dr. is very caring
and flexible. As a working mom of
four I can certainly appreciate this
!!!! (4/2004)
VIRGINIA:
I worked in MO and Il for two years
before moving on and now work in
VA.I have been paid as little as $11
a hour and as high as $34 For doing
the same job so go figure. (1999)
I live just outside Gettysburg and
most hygienist I know make 15 to 18
dollars/hour to start. I have 10
years experience and make just below
20 dollars/hour. I don't use any
insurance benefits since my husband
has them. I get 4 weeks vacation a
year and 1 week of sick/well time.
If we don't use the sick or vacation
time we get paid as a bonus check at
the end of the year. I get 40-60
minutes for each patient and 30 for
most children prophies. We perform
prophies and sealants, but that's
about it. No local anesthetic
permitted here yet. (1999)
With twenty years of experience my
current salary is 240.00 per day
plus adha membership fees, uniforms,
two weeks paid vacation, one week
sick/personal time and six paid
holidays. I strongly encourage
anyone in or around Richmond Va. to
request better compensation if their
current package isn't comparable. I
understand that starting salaries
here range 22-25 per hour. (1999)
I work in Roanoke, VA in a general
practice. I work 4 days at 28 hours
per week at a rate of $225.00/day.
In addition, I get full medical
benefits for myself and my child, 3
weeks paid vacation, paid CE's,
profit sharing, and free dental for
my family. I have no complaints and
work for a saint. (2001)
I would like to inform hygienists'
in the Virginia area what to expect
when asking for wages/salaries in
Virginia:
I work in Lynchburg, Virginia. I am
paid $28 an hour and work 4 days a
week. (I have heard RDHs' getting
paid $32 an hour with years of
experience) I get my health
insurance paid for, 2 weeks paid
vacation, paid holidays, and
compensation for CE classes. My
employers is also helping me plan
for retirement.
Thank you for posting this
information. I feel it is important
for us to know our monetary value.
(6/01)
I work in Fairfax, VA (Washington
Metropolitan area) and I make about
$305/day = $38/hr plus retirement
which when added in would be about
$46/hour or $372/day. I work three
eight-hour days a week. I get 6 paid
days a year which include sick,
vacation, or holidays. My CEU's are
paid in full by my employer and he
buys me disposable gowns. I pay for
my NVDHA dues, my license fee, my
scrubs and shoes, pens, and eyewear.
(4/2004)
I am a new graduate and work in
midwest Virginia. I started at 32.00
an hour and increased to 36.00 an
hour after 6 months. I get full
medical benefits, full dental minus
lab costs, full paid CE's, paid
holidays, and uniforms are provided.
(7/2006)
I am a dental hygienist in the
Chesapeake Bay region of VA with 25
years experience. My compensation
includes $350.00 /day, paid health
insurance, 12 comp days/yr, free
dental work for my family, 401K plan
and Christmas bonus. I work 3 days
per week, 8 hr/day and see 9
patients daily-every 45 min. 30 min.
for children. I pay for my uniforms,
glasses and CE's. I have done some
sub work in another local office
where compensation is 45% commission
plus 401K. No health ins. or other
benefits but daily salary was often
$450- $500/day. It is interesting to
learn the extreme variance of
salaries for dental hygienists.
(8/2006)
Live in Northern Virginia.
Work in two different offices.
One - Salaried - 80,000 per year -
Health, Vacation, ADHA Dues, SEP IRA
Contribution - 12 years now - 31
hours/week - bonus at Christmas,
haven't seen a raise in three years.
Two - Hourly - $47.50/hour -
Uniform Allowance - Paid Vacation -
3.5 years now - 15 to 20 hours/week
- bonus at Christmas - yearly raise
in April. (1/2007)
The northern Virginia area near
Washington, D.C. pays $42 to $50 per
hour, but not many offer benefits
unless you work full time. In the
last year in different offices, I
have been paid $42, $45, and $50 per
hour with no benefits. I get $350
per day to temp thru a temp agency
for a day. (1/2007)
Virginia: Martinsville, VA - - I
have been employed for 2 1/2 years
as a hygienist in Martinsville. I
currently work in a general practice
(1 1/2 years there), 4 days a week
(32 hours). I generally see 10
patients per day (provided they
show), and no shows don't affect my
pay. I am currently paid $28.50 an
hour. I am paid monthly (bummer--but
I'm getting used to it). In
addition, I get full medical
benefits, free dental work for
myself and spouse (w/ exception of
lab fees), 2 weeks paid vacation,
paid CE's (that the office arranges;
any CE courses I voluntarily take
aren't paid for), 401K (my employer
puts in 2% of my salary monthly),
$50.00 monthly uniform allowance, 9
paid holidays, Christmas bonus, and
raises vary depending on job
performance.
I previously worked in a
general/cosmetic practice part-time
(2 days/week) and was compensated on
commission. I made 33% of whatever
my daily production was. Some days
were great and some terrible if
patients didn't keep their
appointments...I wouldn't mind doing
commission based pay again, but with
a base salary + commission. (1/2007)
WASHINGTON STATE:
There seems to be quite a range of
salaries even in the greater Seattle
area where I work. I work full time
for $33/hour with benefits. I get
medical insurance for self and
dependents; dental is covered at
100% for self, spouse, and
dependents; I have 7 paid holidays
per year, the equivalent of 3 weeks
paid vacation and 2 weeks paid sick
leave; I have CE courses paid; I
have a retirement plan; and I have
the best boss I have ever worked for
and a really great office staff to
work with.
Temporary hygienists in this area
start at $35/hour. (1999)
I just graduated from hygiene school
in June 2000. I started out temping
in the greater Seattle/Tacoma area
for $37.00 per hour. I now work 3
days a week for $37.00 per hour.
The average wage in Seattle/Tacoma
area is $35.00 - $40.00 per hour.
(3/01)
I work in downtown Seattle, 37
hrs/week. 20 plus years experience.
$38/hour, 4 weeks vacation, 7 paid
holidays, transit allowance,
retirement, CDE, dental, medical, 4
sick/health days per year (paid if I
am sick, cashed out for them if I
don't use them); I can work when my
DDS is away as there is another
sharing the office; therefore take
vacation when I want. (4/01)
Washington State. Small town. 1 hour
from Seattle. In Seattle you can
make as much as $50.00 per hour if
you do restorative. (6/01)
I work in a small town about an hour
from Seattle, and I only make $34.35
per hour. (6/01)
After observing and talking to many
dental hygienists, starting salaries
range from $32-$37/hour. More
experienced hygienists (5+ years)
look to earn $37-$45/hour. (6/01)
HI ! I have been a hygienist for one
yr now (2006). I started in DT
Seattle at $41/hr FT at my very
first job and $42 at my second PT
job w/ bonuses no benefits $100
/month )(Everett). I live in
Lynnwood, WA now and work at my new
FT job in Everett, WA. I took the
same pay rate w/ the same benefits +
more. 100% paid medical/ in house
dental, monthly bonuses
($200-400/month), staff trips 2x/yr
(Vegas trip this yr), 401K, 33 hrs
/wk, we work 3, 12 hr days, profit
sharing, 4 paid holidays, 6
days paid sick days, CE credits paid
and 1 wk paid vacation after 6
months. I perform half restorative
and hygiene functions. I do lots of
anesthetic for the DDS. I have heard
that in WA right now the average pay
rate is $40-$45. I hope this info
helps. (6/2006)(LYNNWOOD,
WASHINGTON)
The wage for a new grad at the temp.
agency in Spokane starts at $34 per
hour. The new grad wage at the temp.
agency in Vancouver starts at $32
per hour. I've been told that the
new grad wage in general in
Vancouver runs from $30-$35 per
hour. The temp. agency wages in
Vancouver run from $32-$36 depending
on experience. Some new grads from
EWU class of 2006 are rumored to be
making $36 and $38 but I suspect
that is not the norm. I would say in
Spokane $33-$35 is the norm for a
new grad. (December 2006)
Seattle, downtown
$45/hour...37 hours per week
4 weeks paid vacation (I have been
there for 28 years)
8 paid holidays
4 sick/health days
Simple IRA (DDS contributes maximum
at 3%)
Bus pass (no transportation cost)
scrubs
Continuing education (also paid for
CE hours)
And I get to work with a great
staff in a beautiful office with an
excellent (and nice ) dentist!
(1/2007)
I live in Tacoma WA. 3years exp and
exd.
My first job i started at $44.
hour/no benefits. I also worked with
the temp agency for $41/hr.
I covered for a maternity leave in
Seattle at $48/hr - no benes. I know
of 1 hygienist with 4 yrs exp making
$51/hr in Seattle. I now work full
time in Olympia at $49/hr + med (I
pay 25% which is $64month) paid
holidays after 1yr + paid 1 wk
vacation after 1 year, ce classes
paid. If I reach my goal of $1200 in
production a day (averaged for the
month) I receive a $500. bonus - I
usually average 1300-1850., I have 2
rooms and an assistant that helps me
so I can keep on schedule. I do see
alot of patients in the day (about
11 in an 8hr day). I will give
anesthetic for DDS if I have down
time. (6/2007)
As a new RDH graduate in 2008, I am
paid $43/hour to start, with full
medical and dental benefits (paid in
full by the DDS), 7 paid holidays, 1

WEST VIRGINIA:
Getting ready to graduate and just
had my first interview -- $21.25/ hr
was offered. This is pretty high for
starting pay, I think most RDH's
make around 18 to 20 / hr around
here. Occasionally you may hear
about someone making $28/hr, but
then again I also know someone who
makes $11/hr. (9/00)
I am currently working in
Charleston, WV and in a rural area
outside of the city. I am making
$27.50 working for a periodontist in
the city, and $23 in the rural area.
(11/2005)
WISCONSIN:
I have been a hygienist for 6 years
and have two licenses in Wisconsin
and Florida. My license in Florida
is about to expire. I like living
here in Milwaukee and the pay is
better here too! I make $23.50 and
hour and benefits depend on years at
office. I have been there for 5
years so I have 3 weeks vacation, 2
personal days, and 2 sick days paid.
(1999)
I am an RDH in Wisconsin and right
out of school I started at $25/hr, 2
weeks paid vacation, 5 paid sick
days, paid holidays, as well as
medical insurance. My average hours
per week are anywhere from 32-38.
(2/01)
I've been a RDH for two years now in
Wisconsin I make $23.00 an hour with
only 8 days paid vacation, 401k,
free dental(my boss thinks thats a
big benny), and 2 personal days
which i get flat out $80.00. I work
any where from 34-40hrs a week.
(9/01)
The "going rate" for the southern
part of Wisconsin is in the range of
22-26 dollars an hour. (3/2003)
I get paid $27 per hour plus paid
holidays, contribution to a
retirement fund, CE courses paid for
and total respect and responsibility
for what I do. I love my job and my
profession. I am lucky to work for
the boss that I have and for
the profession that I have found.

I am paid hourly. I make $23.50 an

have 5 weeks paid vacation. I have
been employed at my current job for
4 yrs. I live in Chilton, WI.
(10/2004)
I make $28/hr. I get a christmas

I LIVE IN WISCONSIN-MILWAUKEE AREA.
THE MARKET IS FLOODED!!! NO JOBS.
THEY SHOULD CLOSE THE SCHOOLS
HYGIENE PROGRAM FOR A COUPLE OF
YEARS. I DRIVE 40MIN TO WORK 3 DAYS
IN AN OFFICE. I MAKE A BASE PAY OF
$27/HR PLUS MONTHLY BONUS THAT MAKES
MY HOURLY $31-$37/HR. NO BENEFITS.
PAID HOLIDAYS, 2 WEEK VAC. FRIDAYS
AND 2 SAT. A MONTH I WORK IN NORTH
CHICAGO, ILL. I MAKE $37.50/HR. NO

OUT SO I HAVE TO PAY QUARTERLY. I

FOR. ONE FUN TRIP A YEAR IF WE HIT A
CERTAIN PERCENTAGE. WE WENT TO
MEXICO FOR 4 NIGHTS- NO SPOUSES
COULD COME. UNIFORMS AND SHOES
INCLUDED. WE CAN WORK UNDER
PRESCRIPTION. I'VE BEEN PRACTICING
FOR ALMOST 4 YEARS. GETTING BURNT
OUT. MOVING TO SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA.
MORE JOBS, GOOD PAY-I KNOW SOMEONE
MAKING $47/HR. THERE ARE GIRLS IN
MILWAUKEE WORKING FOR $25/HR!!! I
COULD NEVER GET WHAT I MAKE THERE.
PAY RANGES ARE PRETTY SAD. (4/2006)
I live in Appleton area and I have
over 2 years of experience as a
Dental Hygienist. I also have 11
years of Dental Assisting. My pay
rate started @ $24/hr and have not
had a raise yet. I will be evaluated
by the end of the year and hope for
an increase of pay. Only benifits I
recieve are 14hrs of sick time a
year, holiday pay of 7 hrs, 3% match
of 401k, and 2 wks of vacation for 2
yrs in office. I work 3 days a wk at
one office and a half a day at
another. It sure is FLOODED in
Appleton area as well. Your lucky
if you can find part-time and I
agree the Colleges should close for
awhile, since they are pulling more
and more students each
year. (10/2006)
I'm in Fon du Lac, WI. I make
$25.50/hour. I work 32 hrs per week.
I do not have health insurance, but
it is offered. I would make less per
hour to have health insurance. I
don't need it, I have it through my
husband. I get basically free
dental. He takes whatever my
husband's insurance pays.
Technically we get $500.00 per year,
per person and 1/2 off anythng over
that, but that's just on paper. I've
never actually paid anything. The
longer we work there, the more he'll
forgive. I have 5 weeks vacation and
1 week sick pay. We get a yearly
bonus that varies but is usually
$2500.00. He pays for my CE, and
pays me hourly to be there. He pays
for my ADHA membership. He pays for
my uniforms and laundering. We have
profit sharing that's worth about
$50,000 after 7 years. (1/2007)
I am in Wisconsin.
I make $31. and I work 30-33 hrs a
week.
They offer ins. for me and I can pay
for my family.
I have 6 or 7 paid holidays, 48 hrs

WYOMING:
I have been a RDH with exd for 7
years and have worked at the same
dental office the entire time. I now
make 19.50/hr, have 2 weeks
vacation, no sick time, 2 paid
holidays per year. Continuing ed is
provided regularly. Unfortunately no
medical insurance (covered on
husband's policy), I work 4 days per
week and schedule is very flexible
(I have 2 small children). Some
retirement is available. I have
received a net bonus of $1000 for
the past 3 years, and also have $50
uniform allowance annually. Dental
is free for immediate family.
Wyoming salaries vary a lot from
what I hear. (1999)
ENGLAND:
We do get quite well paid for our
work - about £20 per hour- or we can
get 50%of the treatment fee. (1999)
Not all hygienists in England are
lucky enough to get £20 /hour or
50%. I only get £16 /hour in one
office and 45% in the other but I am
lucky in that I have the assistance
of a Dental Nurse in each. Pay in
National Health Service practices
are always lower as practice income
is lower. (1999)
CANADA:
I took my dental hygiene schooling
in Nashville, TN and am still
currently licensed in that state. I
was licensed in 1995 and immediately
moved to Vancouver Island, B.C. I
then had to take a course to
administer L.A. With no hygiene work
experience I began my career working
for 28 bucks an hour. six years
later I now make 35 p/h and my
employer pays state holidays,
uniforms excluding shoes, 2 weeks
paid vacation, and my yearly
licensing fee(300 p/yr). (4/01)
I live in Ontario Canada. I have
been a hygienist for 7 years and
currently make 28 per hour plus 25%
of any thing I bill over 120 per
hour. Usually I make 40 a hour. Most
of us bill about $1200.00 a day.
There are lots of foolish hygienist
in Ontario who are satisfied with
much less pay and trust me no
dentist here wants to pay more than
they have to. I wish hygienist here
would band together and stop letting
the dentists rob us. (10/02)
I have been practicing as a
hygienist for 11 years now. I am
currently making $37/hour, with a
monthly profit sharing cheque of
appr. $100. I have no benefits, get
4% vacation pay. I am expected to
bill $160/hour. I practice in
Ancaster, Ontario, Canada. (3/04)
I have practiced DH for 12 years and
have been in the same office P/T
until this spring when I went F/T. I
currently make $ 40/hour plus 8% vac
pay free dental for my family that I
often do on office hours. He always
gives my extended family a great
deal also. He often takes us out
for lunch (his choice of rest
only!!) I returned to do restorative
Fall 2003 and get $50 when I do
rests. I work in Brampton ON.
(8/2004)
I'm a dental hygienist in Ontario,
Canada with 12 years experience. I
temp for $50per hour (regular
hygiene). (3/2005)
I have been a dental hygienist for
12 years and live in Northern
Ontario. This area has 2 colleges
which graduate approx.40-50 dental
hygienists a year. The average wage
is 18*25 dollars an hour or less if
a hygienist takes it. I agree that
if the dental hygienist would stop
accepting lower wages then all of
them would be making a fair wage.
The responsibility and liability (
not including licensing fee,
continuing education courses for
quality assurance and malpractice
insurance.) is not worth all the
hassles required by us. I am finding
it hard to secure any of work in
this area and starting applying in
the south. I was surprised to find
that there not many jobs out there,
especially not very many full( 3-4)
days a week even in the Toronto
area.
I think that the colleges need to
stop excepting dental hygiene for at
least a year so we are see a demand
for hygienists. (4/2005)
I been working in an office for 3.5
years and was only offered a dollar
raise to make my hourly wage $32. I
really think that I'm worth $35
because of the fact my office is
doing so well and I am really
dedicated to the office and my
patients. London Ontario, Canada.
